I contributed to the design and implementation of high-throughput methodologies for the separation and detection of small molecules in complex matrices.My primary focus was on expanding and refining scheduled multiple reaction monitoring (sMRM) methods, at times constructing them from scratch. This involved the optimization of a myriad of LC/MS acquisition parameters, maximizing the resolution/signal of hundreds of transitions in a single injection.I became well versed in building robust quantitation methods, using software to configure integration, internal/external standards, and quantitative/qualitative criteria. Specialized scripts would reference these criteria, augmenting the functionality and efficiency of the data review process. My experience running/troubleshooting these scripts provided me a basic familiarity with XML/VBScript.I played a key role in the advancement of our industry-leading Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) assay, by: assisting in the development of a dynamic pooling method, drastically reducing turnaround time while maintaining data integrity; and identifying a more reliable internal standard for designer benzodiazepines, improving accuracy by minimizing matrix interferences.I also processed scheduled and certified reference materials and improved extraction/derivatization procedures for drug-drug interaction/chiral resolution assays.With clients nationwide, the NPS assay also gave valuable insight into the distribution and composition of illicitly-manufactured species, allowing us to contribute to a better understanding of the substance use epidemic (see below). We provided pro bono testing to healthcare providers at mental health and harm reduction clinics in underserved areas -- an initiative which highlighted the pressing need for grants to acquire modern instrumentation, offering a humane alternative to historically punitive testing. The data compiled from our NPS studies have been presented at professional conferences.

Specialized as a mass spectrometrist, characterizing oral fluid and blood samples in a laboratory offering clinical toxicology assays to healthcare providers.Operated and maintained a fleet of LC-MS/MS (range of Agilent/Sciex systems/software), GC-FID, and automated ELISA instrumentation. Developed expertise in diagnosing and resolving complex instrument malfunctions, including chromatographic issues, pressure anomalies, and signal problems. Trained and mentored new team members.Utilized liquid handling robots for sample preparation and automated solid-phase extraction. Gained additional experience in manual extraction techniques, including liquid-liquid and solid-liquid extraction. Periodically assisted with preparation of COVID-19 samples for RT-PCR testing.Assessed data in real time, monitoring instrument performance and conducting primary data analysis for assays identifying up to 180 drug analytes per injection. Evaluated each sample for quantitative/qualitative criteria using isotopic internal standards, calibrators, and controls. Preserved patient confidentiality and the security of Protected Health Information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA regulations.Maintained a strong commitment to expanding my knowledge and deepening my understanding of the field, achieving a promotion to the Research and Development department.

I did research with the Department of Physics as part of the 2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in the Sciences (SURFS). My work centered around the refinement of an ion-exchange technique for silver nanoparticle fabrication, as well as the spectroscopic characterization of lead ion-implanted silica. I presented posters on these subjects at the Fall 2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium.I also contributed to proteomic research initiatives within the College of Pharmacy, investigating the development of an accessible methodology for the isolation, purification, and preparation of exosomes from colorectal cancer cells. We analyzed two cell lines with differing 3D morphologies, one cetuximab-resistant and the other cetixumab-responsive.
