The Rockford Lions Club is a community service catalyst that serves and fundraises in order to support the various needs of the community. When I joined the club in 2009, the Rockford Lions were the best kept secret in our area. I sought to change that.Meaningful GrowthOne of the first things I tackled was creating a website that communicates who we are and provides an opportunity for those in the need of our services to contact us in a modern and non-threatening way. This has greatly broadened our reach into the community. Secondly, I created eye-catching signage and forms for our various fundraising activities throughout the year which have helped to dramatically increase our ability to give generously.As a two term president, I simplified our organizational structure, which has allowed more freedom for members to participate in areas of interest to them. It has also increased members’ tenure with the club. When I first joined, we had one woman in our club who left in 2010. Upon her departure, I made it a priority to reach out and recruit more women in order to ensure diversity of perspective and opinion. I am pleased to report they have been invaluable contributors to our club and community.

The Minnesota Historical Society is a growing, multifaceted nonprofit educational organization, and is often looked upon as the standard for historical societies. In my 15 years with the Society, I have had the pleasure of advancing to various challenging roles ranging from Human Resources, Enterprise Technology, business analysis, continuous improvement and project management. The experience I gained taught me - how to work at all levels of an organization, work cross functionally, persevere, trust my instincts and take risks.Change AgentWhile directing a project to integrate our membership and ticketing systems, I challenged our core team to take a broader look beyond integration. With the future in mind, I guided them toward developing a vision for Customer Relationship Management that will eventually help the Society gain insight on how people engage them and, consequently, learn how to better serve them. It will also eliminate shadow systems, abundance of manual processes, support a data governance policy that is being developed and reduce duplicated data across the entire organization. I also emphasized the importance of Change Management because even with the best technology and processes in place, success will be limited by the level of staff adoption. A plan was laid out, presented to the Board of Directors, and approved by senior management. It is now a key part of the strategic priorities for the Society.

The Rockford Veterans Memorial Group was formed for the express purpose to build a memorial in order to recognize the valiant service and sacrifice of all our men and women from our community, and who have given so much of themselves to serve our country.After participating in and witnessing a memorial service in July 2011 for one of our own fallen soldiers serving in Afghanistan, I started off my tenure as president with the Rockford Lions in July 2012 with a goal to build a veterans memorial in our community. In order to strengthen the realization of this effort, I reached out to the Rockford Masons to become a key strategic partner.

Our Father’s Lutheran Church is a religious organization with a more than 40-year history, and is the pillar of comfort and support in our community. One question a member asked at our annual meeting two years ago was where we were headed as an organization. At that time, their question could not be answered because the church was deeply rooted in tradition and activity had become stagnate. That struck a chord with me that inspired my two year tenure as president and resulted in great organizational change.Transformative LeaderThroughout my years leading the Executive Team and Council, I helped establish a solid model for thoughtful, highly relational and meaningful change that has, and will continue to, lead to exciting growth and new traditions in leadership, across our many ministries and for our members. During my tenure as vice president, I helped lead the essential task of developing a new statement of purpose and values. When I assumed the role of president, these guiding principles set the stage for the removal and restructuring of programs that didn’t support our purpose and/or values---and created momentum to keep moving forward. Then we formed, and later refined, a strategic path that contains four steps to guide leadership and members as they mobilize change in our community.This has all led to an amazing transformation. First and foremost, the culture has been rejuvenated with a sense of hope and excitement. A very traditional fall stewardship campaign was boldly relinquished in favor of telling our story in order to inspire giving that would be used to administer our work. Effective communication has not only connected people to our church community in a deeper way, it has increased their financial commitment. Revenue rose by 1.5% in 2012 and increased to 6.5% in 2013. Also, following this simplified framework has allowed leadership to be more adaptable and flexible.
