Technical support for day to day operations, both on the sterile powder vial filling process and on the sterile bulk blend process. Carrying out root cause analysis of manufacturing issues, ranging from HVAC issues to machine processing anomalies.Lead manufacturing shutdown activities from a technical perspective.Lead waste reduction project for disinfectant make-up, projected to save £91k per annum.Accountable for the development and implementation of a project to reduce the number of false rejects on a vial visual inspection system. This change saved £125k per annum.

Stevenage, United Kingdom

This was my second rotation on the GMS Future Leaders Program is at GSK R&D Stevenage, based in the Advanced Manufacturing Technology group. I worked on two main projects; downstream purification of oligonucleotide reaction mixtures and using microfluidics for controlled particle size crystallisation of API.I also investigated the use of new technology on existing manufacturing processes.

Montrose

The first rotation on the GSK Chemical Engineering Future Leaders Program, was at GSK's primary manufacturing facility in Montrose.I have taken part in various process safety studies including: HAZOP, HAZID, HAC and risk assessments.Extensively worked with carbon beds used to abate solvent emissions, providing efficiency improvements and consequent environmental benefits.I have received training in alarm management and implemented improvements on plant to reduce spurious alarms.I have worked with a wide range on functions on plant including; operations, mechanical and automation engineers, process chemists, EHS, quality and validation.

Ulverston

I have spent a year at GSK Ulverston in the technical chemistry department for the industrial placement of my MChem degree.I have performed user testing on samples in the laboratory to simulate plant processes, I then analysed the samples using HPLC and Polarimetry techniques to determine the quantity of impurities present in the samples. This enabled me to support plant processes and assess the impact of process changes. This work supported continuous manufacture of an antibiotic during a supply issue.I have used FTIR-ATR and SEM/EDX to perform analysis on unknown samples. This has allowed the root cause of an issue to be identified and preventative actions to be put in place.
