My PhD research has involved the synthesis of complex organic linkers, which has allowed me to develop competence in challenging multi-step organic syntheses, air and moisture sensitive reactions and characterisation of compounds. I have also gained experience in a broad range of other techniques such as the synthesis and analysis of Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) and Mixed Matrix Membrane (MMM) materials for gas capture and separation applications. More specifically, I have focused on the storage and separation of gases such as CO2, SO2, CH4 and other C2 and C3 hydrocarbons for potential industrial applications. Throughout my PhD I have utilized a broad range of techniques to study the uptake and guest-host interactions of the materials I have produced including gas sorption analysers, synchrotron in-situ gas loaded infrared microscopy, inelastic neutron scattering, neutron powder diffraction and gas permeation rigs coupled with gas chromatography.
