About Jack Main
Born and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland where I studied at Hazlehead Academy. During my time at school, I never had a clear idea of what I truly wanted to do in life. Living in Aberdeen we are mostly known for the Oil & Gas Industry, and like many others, I was told to believe that is what I should be aiming for when I finished academy. Personally, for me, I quickly found out that wasn't for me and it didn't reflect who I am and what my passions are. Although looking back I should've followed my instincts, I pushed on and continued to study at College towards an HND in Mechanical Engineering. This is when it really kicked in for me that this was not the field or career meant for me, I made a tough decision on whether I should suck it up and power on or take a step backwards and start fresh in something new. From this point onwards I learnt what it is like to truly enjoy what you do and be passionate about it. I had always loved to draw as a kid and I had continued this throughout Academy whilst taking Art & Design classes. Unfortunately at the time, I was never aware of or told of many careers in this area. Other than the typical cliché that there is no real money or careers in the arts. Regardless of what I had heard I stayed true to myself and discovered the HND course in Visual Communication, this is where I took my love of art and my raw skills and evolved into a designer with more technical skills and a great foundation of skills in communicating visually. After two great years in which I made many friends and connections, I had grown as a designer and an individual.I then decided to continue my higher education and attend Robert Gordon's University where I studied for 3 years and achieved my Ba(Hons) in Communication Design. Many people say this, but truly my time studying in this course was some of my greatest years where I developed many great relationships with friends, peers, and staff members on the course. Most importantly to me though my confidence in myself and my skills had massively gained through the years and has honestly made me the person I am today. Now we reach the present. My partner Vikki and I made the bold and scary move to leave our lives and hometown of Aberdeen behind. We made the decision to transfer to Australia on a working holiday visa. I am now settled in Melbourne, Australia and I am loving every second of it. We both moved out here to follow our passions and find work in what we love to do. I hope you enjoyed my story and hopefully gives some background into who I am. Thank you for reading!

Assistant Cafe Manager
As the Assistant Cafe Manager I am responsible for the opening and closing of The Works Cafe, Bed Bath N’ Table on a daily basis. My responsibilities include the handling and counting of cash, along with the closing of the till at the end of the day, the maintaining and ordering of various stock, assisting with the gathering of staff availability and the creation of rosters, the approval of invoices and the responding of emails on the cafe computer.I am comfortable in this role where I get to work with a fantastic team everyday, and interact with a wide range of customers including new faces and retiring regulars.
Sales Associate
Voluntary Graphic Designer
At the Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre I was part of the communications team. My role as Voluntary Graphic Designer was to assist the team in creating and scheduling social media posts for their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts. My role typically consisted of researching any upcoming events or important days that the brand would like to post about. As I am not local to Australia, the research gave me a deeper understanding of what events or days are coming up soon, what the meaning or purpose of them are, and why SMRC supports them and how it aligns with their brand. The more I understood and the more research I found helped a lot when I reached the copywriting stage. The main part of my role was assisting the team in the copywriting and image creation for social media posts along with helping them to schedule the posts. My role was mainly to help with the creation and scheduling of posts in advance so that when the date comes they were ready to post. This freed up the rest of the team to focus on more urgent work.Additionally, as a part of the communications team I was there to help in any way that I could relating to graphic design. SMRC is a great brand to be a part of, you gain a lot of satisfaction as they do a lot of meaningful work in the community and you get a sense of purpose on the work that we undertook which excited me.
Team Leader
As I have moved on from being a Team Member to now a Team Leader. I now have further responsibilities in my workplace, for example - looking after my team on shift, handling cash at the end of the night and being responsible for all duties being completed on shift, and speaking with customers more to fix any complaints they may have to make sure everyone is having a great experience at the hotel.
Team Member
Part of the Pub & Grill team at the Village Hotel in Aberdeen, Scotland. This requires me to deliver food and beverages to the customer, work behind the bar when needed and to look after any needs that the customer may have.
Graphic Design Intern
I had the fantastic opportunity to join the design team at Hatch Creations, where I worked closely with design interns from other countries worldwide. This was a ten-week placement that I engaged in remotely from home due to the limitations of the lockdown at the time. I was trusted to create ideas and concepts for live projects with high-level clientele. Each day brought a new challenge and a chance to grow and learn as a designer; I approached each day with excitement and a hunger to better myself and learn closely from the Creative Directors. Upon completing my placement, Hatch accessed my skills and growth and provided a compelling reference and breakdown of the work I was involved in. I was constantly praised for my initiative, work ethic, professionalism, maturity, communication skills, and ability to work as part of a team. The experience and feedback have driven me to enhance my career further in Graphic Design, with a desire to contribute, learn, grow, and be part of an exciting growing team.
