I was most recently employed by DIAGEO as a sales associate at their Johnnie Walker brand home in Edinburgh. My role involves delivering world class customer service in a luxury retail space, working in a fast paced, sales driven environment. Working with hundreds of customers in the store every day requires strong interpersonal skills in terms of both internally with the rest of the team to achieve a successful experience for the customer as well as with the customers themselves to work through their needs and provide the best possible solutions.

Over Christmas of 2020 while home from University I was given the opportunity to work on site as a labourer. This allowed me to understand how a team/several teams on site can work together, how sites work in general and allowed me real insight into what it’s like on site on a daily basis from the point of view of a construction worker.

After Covid-19 caused a full lockdown I was furloughed from Hugo Boss. I went looking for a new Covid-19 proof job and found myself in a full-time security role at the QEU Hospital at home in Glasgow. My job mainly involved preventing members of the public who were not patients from entering the building (as there were no visitors allowed inside), directing members of the public who were patients to the correct area and ensuring staff follow the one-way system in place to help maintain all anti Covid-19 practices. My interpersonal skills were tested more than in any of my previous jobs. The role required me to deal with all types of people displaying all types of emotions. Several emotionally difficult situations would arise on a day-to-day basis when dealing with those who have sick or in some cases dying family within the hospital, as well as patients themselves.

At my previous job in Hugo Boss my main duty was serving customers on a one-to-one basis, an excellent standard of customer service was expected. For me, this was the first time I had regular clients who I would regularly liaison with to discuss their needs or what they were looking to buy next. If new items came into store which I thought they may like I would often contact them to let them know so I built up a rapport with many of them which was a nice feeling but also good experience for me going forward. Of course, there were day-to-day customers whether it be piecing together a suit for a wedding or just grabbing a pair of socks, I enjoyed working with customers as people are all different, so they all have a different story to tell. Non-customer duties involved keeping the store looking as it should with the correct number of items in the correct sizes in the correct places, ideally at all times. Monitoring stock can be difficult with a busy store so certainly taught me more about multi-tasking and staying organised. Another big part of working in luxury retail was the standards expected of myself, I was expected to be looking and feeling my best on every shift so I could deliver the best service possible, another thing which I have carried forward.

My first job with Debenhams mainly required me to keep on top of the store going around folding jeans, jumpers etc which had been left lying as well as manning the fitting rooms. I also helped customers where I could.
