Rise At Rutgers
Undergraduate research experience. The objective for this research was to advance therapies for post traumatic brain injury (TBI) using nanofiber scaffolds and astrocytes. The main goal was to know how the structure/ physical properties of nanofiber scaffolds affect the morphological and mechanical behavior of astrocytes. Understanding the characteristics of astrocytes on these scaffolds allows for distinctive modification to control the reactivity after TBI.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
For this research experience I was teamed up with a Graduate student who was doing research In Dr.Cohen's neuroscience lab. This research was concentrated on testing the efficacy of human fetal brain-derived, pluripotent, nontumorigenic, hypoimmunogenic neural stem cell line with a normal karyotype (hfSC) in alleviating NMDA induced damage to the CA3 region of tne hippocampus of normal Han-Wistar Rats. To determine the success of the transplanted hfSCs in the damaged CA3 region, we used a few memory tests to determine the efficacy of the treatment. The ability of these hfSC to improve neuronal damage suggest that these human-derived stem cells could be an effective treatment for people with neurodegenerative disorders affecting the hippocampus.
