During the placement I attempted to measure the mechanical and electrical properties of CVD-grown graphene sheets. The placement required highly independent work and collaboration with other students in the group. The direction of the project changed continuously, as isolation of the graphene layer proved difficult. One of the isolation methods involved the use of a critical point dryer, which gave me my first experience of working in a clean room. Working with a limited budget and timescale meant I had to design and build my own testing equipment. The placement therefore gave me experience of academic research, especially the independent thinking required to advance the project. Show less
