Reporter
In the Times' Metro department, I wrote breaking news and, later, covered the L.A. County government beat.
Assistant Editor
I managed a yearlong initiative that explored a variety of issues around mental health β medical, structural, personal, societal and definitional.
Freelance Journalist
Health Reporter
During my time as health reporter, I focused much of my attention on mental illness and addiction. I wrote about public policy, health disparities and general health issues that affect Oklahomans. I often shared my perspective on NewsOK podcasts and on camera in our studio. I emceed community forums, and I frequently spoke to local organizations about my work. I also created and moderate Oklahomaβs Addiction and Mental Health Community, a Facebook group where nearly 2,000 Oklahomans discuss mental illness and addiction. We regularly help people find treatment, support groups and other community resources. I started the group in April 2014, and it has been incredibly rewarding to watch members learn from each other's experiences. The group has been able to thrive, in part, because of our community guidelines, which help keep dialogue civil and productive.
Reporter
While at Oklahoma Watch, I wrote about women in prison. (Fact: Oklahoma ranks No. 1 in the United States in female incarceration per capita, a ranking the state has held for more than 10 years) I regularly visited Eddie Warrior Correctional Center, a minimum-security prison in Taft, where I interviewed female inmates about a range of topics, including motherhood, barriers to care and childhood trauma. To amplify our reporting, Oklahoma Watch partnered with newspapers, radio stations and TV stations across the state to provide comprehensive coverage about the state's female incarceration rate. I helped coordinate these collaborative efforts. Our combined coverage raised a significant amount of public awareness and ultimately led to lawmakers passing significant criminal justice reform.
General Assignment Reporter
Within our four-person newsroom, I wrote breaking news for our website and enterprise pieces for our biweekly newspaper. In 2010, Sand Springs officials were struggling to get a handle on the rising number of methamphetamine labs popping up around the city. I wrote often about the impact that drug abuse had on the community. My editor, Dustin, and I focused much of our attention on a story that pointed out that Sand Springs had no ordinance about who was responsible for cleaning up meth labs found in rental properties. After our story ran, the city council passed such an ordinance. Part of my job was to shoot photos and videos, whether it be for breaking news or longer features. This video is one of my favorite video stories I did while at the Leader -- http://bit.ly/SSgerdau.
Editor-In-Chief And A Long List Of Other Positions
While at the O'Colly, I held a variety of positions, including editor-in-chief. During my senior year, I wrote an investigative series about questionable practices at Oklahoma State University's Center for Veterinary Health Sciences. After four months of reporting, the school changed its policies, no longer euthanizing dogs as a part of its veterinary teaching practices.
Intern
I covered Congressional hearings and press conferences at Capitol Hill, writing regular blog entries for the Dispatch political website. I interviewed lawmakers, government department directors, lobbyists and a variety of other people for the newspaper and also on camera for the Dispatchβs TV stations.
