I have led and participated in ecologically-based public and private design projects around the world. My work has focused on designing contemporary landscapes by maximizing ecosystem services for human health and well-being as well as site operation and function. As a landscape architect and ecologist I have developed a practical understanding of how nature works and how the build environment can be modeled off of nature to maximize landscape functions. My work often centers on resolving nature-based, design aesthetic and ecosystem functional conflicts. I am coauthor of the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES), as well as the Sustainable Sites Handbook. My work has included collaboration with the US Botanical Gardens, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the Nelson Institute, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Nature Conservancy, the Chilean government, and many academic and educational institutions. Ayres Associates is a multi-specialty architectural/engineering consulting firm providing services from a network of 12 offices in five states – Wisconsin, Florida, Colorado, Arizona, and Wyoming.
