Some people choose to work in IT, I guess I was sort of destined for it.After spending most of my teenage summers working on my family ranch, I thought I was destined for a life working outdoors doing some kind of manual labor but after work one day I parked my truck outside of the local military recruiter's office. I had always known I would join the military and thought this would be the perfect way to go explore the world while not being chained to a desk. Near the end of boot camp, I heard my drill instructor call out my “MOS” (job title). "POWERS, O651". I was so excited to find out about what kind of tank I would get to drive or what kind of rocket launcher I would get to operate. To my surprise, the Marine Corps designated me to be a "Cyber Network Operator" (network admin) and my journey into Information Technology began. After re-enlisting I would be hit with another surprise, orders to Marine Special Operations Command, where I would learn how to be a jack-of-all-trades military communications expert. Becoming proficient in multiple technology domains, although cyber would turn out to be my favorite. After earning my Security+ and starting the pursuit of a degree in Information Technology, I decided to pursue a career in Cyber security outside of the military.I am currently a SOC Analyst Level 2 working for DefendEdge and conduct daily firewall management, security ticket queue updates, client relationship and expectation management and coach junior analysts on the tasks of their position as well as encouraging them to pursue higher education and certifcations. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my wife as we look forward to being parents, cheering on my Dallas Cowboys, playing my guitar, and always keeping Jesus first and foremost in my life.
