I moved to Portland about—let's say—six months before it was the cool thing to do. I found a night job at a grocery store and secured a coveted internship at the town's Pulitzer Prize-winning weekly. I blogged and wrote print articles for WW, while checking the paper's "Tip Line" and fielding story ideas from the community. Lucky for me, then-managing editor Hank Stern—was a never-ending fount of journalism wisdom and experience. He let me pick his brain on news judgement, snappy writing and solid structure.

I worked for UC Santa Cruz's student-run paper as a campus reporter. I soon advanced to editor of the city news desk and later to managing editor. In just over a year, I learned the trade of journalism and climbed ranks to nearly the top of the paper. In addition to editing and writing, I learned how to work with others, develop young talent, speak and write persuasively and even stand up for my principles during a staff meeting.
