During my time there, the company has recently rebranded to SLB with a focus on providing reliable, accessible and affordable energy to meet growing demand, while rapidly decarbonizing for a sustainable future. This gave me amazing exposure to how organisational change is implemented, received, and adapted to. My job title was “Compensation Student Intern”. Compensation is a sub-function within HR that focuses on ensuring competitive pay for our populations of workers across the globe. This is so we can attract, retain, motivate and reward the employees of the company. The Compensation team is split into three main teams – the Compensation Value Experts (CVEs); who are assigned to a geographical area and are the main analysts of the compensation of that geographical area, the Implementation team; who are in charge of individual compensation adjustments, such as if someone changes job or gets a promotion, and the Central team; who globally overlook the processes, models and resources used by the other two teams. My role mainly involved working with the central team; completing short-term tasks like budgets, editing compensation processes, and promoting compensation brand awareness as well as long term projects such as creating a global short-term incentives platform for use by the HR function on Microsoft Power BI. During the year, I also got to work with the CVEs. Firstly, learning about regional compensation benchmarking, salary submissions and the process of completing a compensation review. Then, producing and completing compensation reviews of my own for the expatriate and Commuter employees within the company. My time at SLB was one of real development, both personal and professional. Through observation and precise questioning of my coworkers, my communicative, planning, and improvisional skills improved and furthered my role as a barista, bartender, and Front of house. I learnt skills such as coffee making and calibrating a coffee machine, and how to interact effectively with customers.
