I write grants, manage donor relationships, edit stories, recruit board members, distribute articles to publishing partners, represent the organization in public and promote the mission of investigative journalism for the Pacific Northwest. Spokane, Washington Area

As editor of the weekly paper for the Inland Northwest, I led a dozen staff journalists and a diverse network of contributors whose narrative and investigative reporting earned numerous accolades, including a national Sigma Delta Chi Award. During my tenure, the paper enjoyed the highest market penetration of any urban weekly in America, according to Media Audit data. In 2016, Editor & Publisher named The Inlander one of “10 newspapers that do it right.”

A staff reporter, I wrote breaking news, longform narratives and investigations. Highlights included investigative reporting from inside a dangerously overcrowded jail where I spent 48 hours living as an inmate in a maximum-security cellblock. The paper submitted that story and other related pieces for the Pulitzer Prize.

Highlights included deeply reported investigations into the Hanford nuclear site, one of the world’s most polluted places, and a tragic shooting at a local high school.

I wrote for U.S. papers, including the San Francisco Chronicle, the Denver Post and the Tampa Bay Times. Topics included immigration and the impact of Sept. 11; the plight of the Guatemalan twins who were conjoined at the head; and Jose Morales, an immigrant mistakenly caught up in the Washington-area sniper investigation and later deported.

I wrote news, features and enterprise stories as a full-time contract writer on the Metro desk. I spent much of that time writing about the New York Police Department, covering breaking news (including the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks), trends and policy issues.
