Performed ranch duties such as moving livestock, maintaining water systems, fixing barbed wire and electrical fencing, and building infrastructure out of wood and other materials. Used excel to digitalize files detailing historic stocker contracts on the ranch to help make decisions about future stocking numbers. Collected grass samples for ongoing research on the ranch. Additionally, marketed and sold our grass-fed beef product to local customers.

Responsible of the management of the Stocker Cattle Enterprise class offered at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. This class meets once a week and travels to Swanton Pacific Ranch several weekends a month between January and June to manage stocker cattle at the ranch and take grass samples of pastures on the ranch. Personal duties included budgeting weekend meals, planning in class and field activities, and transporting students from campus to the ranch (about a 3 hour drive).

Managed cow-calf herd of cattle and maintained ranch infrastructure at Swanton Pacific Ranch. Operated small engine machinery such as chainsaws and weed whackers as well as heavy equipment. Conducted soil research on the rangeland monitoring impacts of cattle on soil bulk density and water holding capacity. Practiced field research such as residual dry matter sampling. Assisted coworkers in other ranch enterprises such as crop production, forestry, and watershed management. Presented a management plan for cattle on the ranch based on research conducted throughout the summer.
