In medieval times, the jester's keen social commentary provided laughter and merriment to the court, but their main responsibility was to provide the King with doses of truth and reality. They were often the only person permitted to "hold up a mirror" to the Ruler without fear of being banished.That's how I view my work as a learning facilitator, speaker, and coach. It allows me to ask inconvenient but powerful questions to encourage people to consider familiar challenges from unfamiliar perspectives, not to stir the pot per sé but to offer alternative ways of looking at things. The process creates awareness, which in turn, creates confidence and a sense of empowerment, propelling them forward toward their intended outcome. So far, it seems to be working.With respect to my unique approach to managing change in organizations, I never guessed that the most grievous changes and the darkest moments in my life would lay the groundwork for a completely new perspective on creating capacity and resilience for those preparing for organizational change, but it did. That's how our physiological process of adaptation works, if you let it. I'm absolutely privileged to do what I love and call it work. Nothing is more satisfying than working with someone who's been stuck in a change and have them experience one of those amazing AHA moments that changes their understanding and slingshots them forward. We've historically been focused on curing the negative outcomes of unprocessed change. I suggest we instead look upstream to create change capacity. Let's give people new ways of understanding their change experience and new tools and concepts to make sense of their current change and lay the foundation to make future changes more comfortable and less costly.
