About Jade Lane π
I'm an experienced transformative justice practitioner, working alongside communities impacted by structural and systemic violence. Over the past decade, I've led innovative local and international programs in sexual and gender-based violence prevention, disaster management, and public health. My work emphasises community-led interventions that promote harm reduction and decarceration.Currently, I work at Burnet Institute, where I lead planning and implementation of The Forestβa holistic, place-based prison-to-community program designed to end cycles of reincarceration for people who use drugs. I contribute to Burnet's Justice Health and Implementation Science working groups and I'm the Principal Investigator on Burnetβs first ANROWS-funded research project βWe Keep Us Safe: Co-designing community-led responses to domestic, family, and sexual violence among people with a history of drug use and criminalisationβ.My professional practice is underpinned by lived experience of violence and criminalisation and draws heavily on the generative possibilities of abolition and transformative justice. I'm passionate about disrupting existing ways of working by centring people with lived experience in the production of new knowledge and practice. I'm a skilled strategist and facilitator. My research interests include the use of co-design and feminist participatory action research to explore non-carceral approaches to violence prevention and response, with a particular focus on community-led alternatives. I'm considering undertaking a PhD, against my better judgement.Outside of work, I'm the Co-Chair of Speak Australia and a Legal Observer with Melbourne Activist Legal Support. In the real world, you'll find me riding horses, jumping in rivers, and slowly making my way through an ever growing stack of books.
