Strategic Advisor

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States

CORPORATE PROFILE: A $25M privately held digital transformation and professional services organization with 500 employees specializing in designing and deploying global SAP solutions in many industries. RESPONSIBILITY PROFILE: Post-sale of Emergys, I was retained by the new owners to serve as a strategic advisor to the Board and CEO for the successful transition of control.

Chief Strategy Officer

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States

RESPONSIBILITY PROFILE: As Chief Strategy Officer, I reported to the Emergys Corp CEO and the Future Tech Holdings CEO. I was in charge of establishing continuity after the company’s sale to a PE company, including assisting clients, revenue generation, and analyzing the overall strategy to achieve strategic goals.

2018 - 2021 ~3 yrs

Chief Executive Officer

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States

RESPONSIBILITY PROFILE: With a $20M OPEX, $7M CAPEX, and $25M Revenue Goal, my leadership as Emergys’ CEO spanned 500 employees with 15 direct reports. I was responsible for day-to-day operations, strategy development, managing a $25M P&L book with 250 international resources, and revenue generation. I was determined to scale this SAP solutions organization, leveraging extensive knowledge and experience. I led a successful startup in a market dominated by large, well-funded, entrenched competitors. I built the team, infrastructure, and strategic plan without external funding. In leading execution, we achieved operational and sales structure with a systematic lead flow, and I personally closed multiple marquee-level accounts, including a Fortune 500 Technology company, in the first 90 days. Emergys achieved and maintained organic growth at 211% CAGR over 15 years, driving sales from a startup to $25M. The company became an attractive takeover target and was purchased by Future Tech Holdings. As noted above, I was retained as Chief Strategy Officer until 2021 and subsequently transitioned to Strategic Advisor to the Board & CEO.ACHIEVED IN THIS ROLEMERGERS & ACQUISITIONS• I spearheaded efforts to acquire a Canadian company (Open Business Process) to expand SAP sales market share into Canada. Over five months, I conducted due diligence, evaluated acquisition and pricing, and partnered with the CFO to ensure that financials were in order. These efforts successfully executed the deal, which expanded the company’s geographical presence, grew the top-line by $2M, and delivered bottom-line earnings of $1M over the first year.

Chief Executive Officer (Achievements Part 2)

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States

ACHIEVEMENTS CONTINUEDEBIT GROWTH• EBITDA growth was required to bolster Emergy’s reputation for an eventual sale. We set targets for the organization to achieve $2M in top-line growth and $500K in bottom-line development. To reduce costs, we offshored select roles in the back office and reorganized the resource mix to a contractor model, which maximized productivity and allowed an elastic resource model that quickly scaled during customer transformation initiatives. We also acquired the Canadian company (OBP, above), further expanding our reach. This doubled EBITDA to $1M, which exceeded goals and catalyzed the company’s eventual sale.GLOBAL / NATIONAL EXPANSION• One of the company’s leading technology suppliers, desired to expand coverage with service provision in Latin America and Asian geographies. Established offices, recruited, trained, and mentored an international ELT, incorporated, identified, secured resources, ensured local government compliance, and negotiated contracts over the next six months. This strategy became SOP and best practice, increased customer satisfaction, and achieved growth of 15% in the top line, 25% in the bottom line, and 20% in the organization.ELT RECRUITING• Resource constraints mandated a new CRO within the next quarter to focus on expanding SAP software sales. I developed a strategy in 14 days to source recruiters, leverage internal networks, and consult with SAP. Over the next 3 weeks, I conducted phased interviews, negotiated contracts/compensation structures, and formed tiered systems for the new CRO’s hires. These efforts seamlessly onboarded an entire Sales team, which generated $5M in immediate revenue by convincing a new client to select Emergys for its SAP services.

1998 - 2018 ~20 yrs

Chief Executive Officer (Achievements Part 3)

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States

BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION• SAP sales to new customers required new hardware, but the physical stack was expensive to maintain and rapidly obsolete. Determined to reverse trends, I pioneered a strategy with the CTO and SAP to utilize AWS and substitute existing infrastructure to cloud technology. We identified target customers and industries, established SAP licensing and cost models, and crafted automation to strengthen customer solution implementation capabilities. As one of the first SAP resellers to execute this strategy, the company achieved additional sales of $1M with 20% margins and recurring revenue and margins from cloud installation.BOARD GOVERNANCE• To sell the company, the COO recommended assembling a Board to enhance the business’s reputation in the eyes of prospective buyers. I consulted senior leaders to develop a list of candidates, vetted candidates, negotiated compensation plans, and created a structure. Once complete, we designed business plans, R&D strategies, and other offerings to evangelize to the Board every quarter. This Board was instrumental in avoiding drawbacks and other difficulties that contributed significantly to the sale of the company.SERVICES / PRODUCT OPTIMIZATION• Post-implementation of software, our customers tended to require additional support. Investigation revealed a lack of user understanding. To mitigate this, I crafted a strategy to implement a service model to train customers, address issues, and help them build technology roadmaps to transform their business aligned to their strategic plans incrementally. We formulated the offering (complete with supporting tools and websites), created contracts, and built a team to execute it. Over four years, these efforts secured 20 customers that signed up for services, which generated $2M in annual revenue with a 40% gross margin.

1998 - 2018 ~20 yrs

Chief Executive Officer (Achievements Part 4)

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States

ACHIEVEMENTS CONTINUEDCLOUD INTEGRATION / MACHINE LEARNING• Extensive labor and time were required for inventory counting in the warehouse. Thus, I developed a solution to utilize automated drones to count inventory at night without operational disruption. The plan included spearheading product development over the next year, setting timelines, managing governance, and working with teams to execute R&D, programming, and product sales. This project resulted in the industry’s first-ever inventory counting drone project integrated with ERP, which has already been successfully sold to a pilot customer.EMPLOYEE MENTORING / ENGAGEMENT• I determined to mentor an employee lacking customer communication skills, which historically caused issues. I coached this individual to analyze and document customer concerns properly, brainstormed a myriad of unique solutions rather than focusing on just one technical aspect, and assisted them in leveraging the resources surrounding them. This mentorship drastically improved the employee’s performance, and he now serves as the Vice President of Delivery for the entire organization.
