Whilst I am taking a break from HGV driving, I took this position as a warehouse order picker at Heron Foods. My duties are to pick orders by means of using the talkman headset system and operating LLOPs(low level order pickers) for each individual Heron foods store. During quiet periods on the job, I often require to undertake cleaning duties and box up damaged stock.

Whilst working alongside my other role at DFDS, I opted for a more sustainable career to become HGV driver through the HGV Driver training scheme. I felt I was suited to the role, having previously demonstrated a good knowledge of Vehicle maintenance and engineering and at the time I had been driving for 7 years with a clean license without any points or convictions. During my traineeship, I learned the fundamentals of HGV driving and logistics such as EU driver’s hours/working time directive, Vehicle safety and walk around checks, load security, maintenance, vulnerable road users and eco-safe driving techniques. I passed my CPC training in August 2022 and I currently hold a full C+E license with no convictions or endorsements as of present.

Immingham Docks

As a casual car driver, my duties were to discharge and backload brand new vehicles from Manufacturers such as BMW, Mini, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Toyota, Volvo, and Opel Astra cars/Vivaro Vans onto RO/RO ships for export and import. I also discharged Volvo/Scania tractor units, Rigid trucks and bus/fire engine rolling chassis and on a monthly basis, I would voluntarily backload end-of-life fleet HGV’s/Buses for export to Namibia. During my time at DFDS Seaways, I gained more in-depth knowledge of terminal operations on Immingham Docks and the logistics sector in general. On some shifts, I would be selected to drive the crew minibuses and I would ensure the minibuses were safe and roadworthy by completing pre-shift checks and submitting them to the Team leader. Sometimes whilst on shift, I also would be required to cover gate duties to ensure security was maintained on the docks at all time whilst the vehicles would be taken over to the other areas of the docks from the compound. Before DFDS terminated the Deep-Sea Kia vessel contract, I would undertake rigging duties on the ships to ensure all lashings were un-done ready to discharge the vehicles.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a downturn in work at my role at DFDS and I had a connection who offered me employment working for his business as an industrial cleaner. Whilst working at Clark and Daniel, I learned new skills such as high pressure jetting and restorative cleaning of brickwork, stonework, fascias, UPVC, and Glass. Our clients mainly involved building companies who specialised in office/factory/warehouse refits and we was tasked with the final touches of projects to make them more presentable for handover.

After I was unfortunately made redundant from my previous role, I took the role as a pre-delivery inspection operative. My duties entailed of checking brand new VAG Group vehicles such as VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat for damages and defects and to prepare them ready for delivery to clients. The customers were mainly rental companies and fleet operators so as part of a close-knit team, we had to work together to ensure that every vehicle that passed through the PDI process was inspected properly to meet the customer’s satisfactions. During my time there, I gained knowledge of using diagnostics equipment to enable/disable various functions by reprogramming ECU’s. Sometimes to ensure the daily targets were met, I was often required to assist on the valeting bays to help get every vehicle through the full pdi process.

As an apprentice marine engineer, my duties were to assist the qualified engineer on jobs whilst learning about the repair, servicing and routine maintenance of MAN marine diesel engines and technologies fitted to the offshore windfarm vessels, whilst maintaining good housekeeping in the workshop and on jobs and ensuring all work areas are kept clean and tidy during and after finishing any jobs. I was also expected to liaise with external bodies dealing with the company which developed my communication skills during troubleshooting scenarios, and also I occasionally covered office duties such as answering telephone calls and checking parts stock and prices using the MANTIS specialist database.

As a Customer Assistant/Trolley Collector, my duties were to collect trollies from the designated bays and huts around the store car park, assist customers with general enquiries, help customers who are less able such as the elderly and disabled, maintaining general housekeeping by ensuring all bays and front of the store is kept clean and tidy and all trollies are kept clear of rubbish and cleaned regularly. I was also occasionally require to cover the security guard’s breaks by manning the CCTV booth, and voluntarily participating in charity fundraising activities for customers inside the store.
