As a trial lawyer in one of the nation's premier law firms, I provide Swiss-army knife versatility representing employers in labor and employment litigation and counseling and all types of enterprises in business litigation. I represent employers in discrimination cases, unfair labor practices and wage and hour cases. I also negotiate collective bargaining agreements and conduct internal workplace investigations. In the business litigation area, I help clients solve problems without litigation when possible, and win in court when it comes to that.

As the University's Executive Director of Employee and Labor Relations, I led a six-person Employee & Labor Relations team responsible for advising University HR professionals, faculty and administrators on the full range of labor and employment issues for union and non-union employees at the University of Chicago. I also served as the University's chief labor advisor and negotiator.I administered and interpreted staff employment policy and labor contracts, advised the Office of the Provost and the Office of the President on labor relations matters involving staff and academic appointees, handled union grievances, reviewed employee terminations, suspensions, layoffs and other significant employment actions and investigated employee complaints. I also advised University departments on employee performance and behavior management, department reorganizations, absence management, and mediated workplace conflicts.

As an equity partner in one of the nation's top boutique labor and employment law and commercial litigation practices, I specialized in representing management in labor and employment litigation and counseling. I represented both public and private employers in employment discrimination, unfair labor practices and class action wage and hour cases. I am also successfully handled numerous law enforcement interest arbitrations, negotiated collective bargaining agreements and conducted internal investigations.I have tried approximately 100 bench trials and contested motions, over 75 interest and grievance arbitrations across the United States and 25 jury trials in state and federal courts as well as conducted hearings in administrative agencies including the Illinois Labor Relations Board, the National Labor Relations Board, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and other agencies in Illinois and other states. Before entering private practice, I was employed as law clerk to the Honorable Justice John J. Bowman of the Illinois Appellate Court. I am then proud to have served as a Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney for nine years, assigned to the Civil Bureau’s Labor and Employment Unit and later as to the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau concentrating in the investigation and prosecution of homicides and sex crimes. My final assignment in the State's Attorney's Office, and the one of which I am the most proud, was as the State’s Attorney’s Office’s specialist in serial sex crimes.

I served in the Office of the Cook County State's Attorney for nine years, working in the Civil Bureau’s Labor and Employment Unit and later as a criminal prosecutor concentrating in the investigation and prosecution of drug offenses, property and violent crimes. My final position was as the State’s Attorney’s Office’s specialist in serial sex crimes.Experience included:Secured a guilty verdict and sentences of life without parole on a first degree murder charge against two men who stabbed an elderly woman to death in her home during a home invasion (People v. Alonzo and Nathaniel Fields).While serving in the Felony Review Unit in which I assisted detectives with investigations, secured a suspect’s confession to a gang retaliation murder. Jake later testified about the confession at the defendant’s trial. The confession, combined with other evidence, led to a guilty verdict on first degree murder charges and a sentence of 23 years in prison (People v. Octavis Sims).Tried several members of the Renegade Vice Lords gang for a murder resulting from an attempt at gang retaliation. The heavily-armed defendants set out to kill members of a rival gang, the Mafia Insane Vice Lords, and surrounded a house in which they believed their rivals were present. In fact, no gang rivals were inside the home and it was instead occupied by a grandmother, her grandchildren, and other innocent family members. The defendants opened fire on the house with multiple firearms. The hail of gunfire killed the grandmother. Jake and his trial partners secured first degree murder convictions and decades-long prison sentences for the defendants (People v. Willie Richard, Walter Edwards, Lawrence Coleman, Eddie Coleman et al.).

As a Judicial Law Clerk to Justice John J. Bowman of the Illinois Appellate Court, Second District in Du Page County, Illinois, I analyzed the records on appeal in criminal and civil cases, researched the law, prepared for and attended oral arguments and wrote draft opinions for Justice Bowman.
