Performed various tasks as a fully qualified reactor engineer of the operating unit (i.e. V. C. Summer Unit 1). Some of the tasks include: reactor physics testing, periodic surveillances, reactor performance monitoring, flux mapping, reactivity management, reactor core anomaly investigations, etc. Fuel procurement, fuel amortization, loading pattern development and contract negotiations are among the main responsibilities of a nuclear fuel management engineer. In this role, continuous oversight was performed to ensure that the vendors adhere to the terms and conditions of the contract. This was done by verifying the deliverables, reviewing invoices and checking product quality. Another responsibility in this position included evaluation of design change packages to support the two AP1000 units under construction. This responsibility included reviewing technical reports, design documents and written recommendations.

Designed loading patterns for Plant Vogtle and Plant Farley that met energy requirements and safety limits within the budget. This was accomplished through optimizing fuel assemblies and burnable absorbers to ensure safe reliable operation of the nuclear stations while still minimizing fuel cost. These projects were managed until all the fuel assemblies are loaded in the core. This was accomplished through departmental design reviews, implementing contractual procedures, and creation and resolution of action items to support nuclear reactor operation.

Researched and provided recommendations on 10CFR50 Appendix H - Reactor Vessel Material Surveillance Program Requirements. The completed project included: revised procedures on how to remove the dosimeter capsules in the nuclear instrumentation cavities, detailed description of all the dosimeters in each capsules, recommendation of dates on when to remove the capsules for inspections, and compiled references and documents used. During the course of the internship various emerging issues were resolved with other qualified engineers.
