Growing up in a coastal community, I gained a unique perspective on human’s interaction with the marine environment. I learned how to operate boats, and navigate the busy waterways of Cape Cod. I was raised in an area centered around marine science. This exposure to the ocean from a scientific perspective gives me a deeper understanding of the reciprocal influence between humans and the sea.Given my affinity for the ocean, I sought jobs in the maritime field at a young age. In high school I worked as a retail associate at West Marine, where I gained customer service experience along with exposure to people working on recreational and private boats.Once in college, I spent my summers working at a fish market and wholesaler. There, I worked my way from retail and dishwasher to a wholesale delivery driver and quality control coordinator. These roles enabled me to learn the logistics of the seafood industry from securing it at the source in Boston or New Bedford all the way to the consumer at the retail or restaurant level. My passion for marine life, the economy driven by coastal and ocean resources, and the conservation of the environment led me to study Marine Affairs (BA) at the University of Rhode Island. This interdisciplinary field allowed me to familiarize myself with environmental science with a focus on maritime policy, law, and management, as well as the social and economic aspect of the coastal and marine environment. Along with my studies in the classroom, I studied coral reef ecology in Quintana Roo, Mexico over school break. Also, the summer prior to my senior year in college I undertook an independent study in conjunction with my job at the fish market in which I surveyed local fishermen and stakeholders on changes in local fisheries in recent decades.
