Doctoral Student
PhD topic focuses on timelapse electrical resistivity tomography processing, petrophysical lab work, and slope stability analysis. The PhD topic is partnered with Lancaster University.
Work Placement
3 week placement with the geophysics group at RSK, shadowed on site work. Involved with acquiring Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and electromagnetic data.
President/Secretary
Arranged talks and field trips for the University of Leicester geology department. The highlight was a presentation by a US TV show host Geoff Notkin on meteorite hunting (which included novel uses of geophysics).
Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (Sure)
(6 weeks) Used scanning electron microscopy and energy X ray dispersive spectroscopy to study a Martian meteorite sample; an upper crustal Martian basalt. Studied the chemisty of pyroxene and olivine phases; typically found to 80 -50% Enstatite/ Forsterite. A shock melt vein dissects the sample and hosts zones of possible hydrothermal alteration which have entrained volatiles and serpentenised surrounding olivine crystals. It possible these hydrothermal processes occurred on Mars; I proposed they may have been caused by a impact induced hydrothermal system.
