About James Brouckman
What does success mean to me? This question I have been asked many times while I was growing up. Money, Influence, Family, and Experiences are all possible answers to the question. Combining two or more of these makes one feel more sophisticated or complex. In actuality, though, I have realized that imprecision in these words has made it difficult for me to orient myself toward my goal of success.During the second half of my college experience, I had above-average opportunities available to me. From an internship at a large manufacturing company to great grades and seemingly great friends and family I began to look like someone who had it together. In actuality, though I was nowhere near satisfied. Most of my decision-making was aimless at best following in the general direction of the life I aspired to have. Thankfully after being exposed to a good deal of family issues I got the wake-up call I needed. In November of my junior year, I had a realization that I didn’t really know what it was I was chasing.I looked at lots of informative material about what makes life good or worth it and felt shallow as a result. Part of me felt guilty for wanting finer things in life while part of me was unable to accept that I had needs outside of what I could control directly. Over about three months of self-discovery, I came to a couple of orienting principles that I have started to live my life around. These are not an exhaustive list of my life goals just thoughts to keep in the back of my mind when deciding what to do on a high level.Move towards creating a meaningful impact on as many people as possibleDevelop relationships that help to make both of us better peopleWork to obtain the resources so that I can answer calls to adventure As a result of these principles, lots of things in my life started to change. From dropping things I found a poor use of time to adding extracurriculars I was able to begin making an impact on campus. I also spent over a hundred hours working on applications and interviews to upgrade myself from a manufacturing job in the midwest to a large tech company in San Francisco. I think software will be the most scalable way for me to provide impact. Also, it sounds like a lot of fun to move across the country. Overall I hope to continue leveraging my growing skillset in order to impact millions of people over the course of my life.
