  • Filtrona Extrusion

    Filtrona Extrusion Jun 2005 - Sep 2006
    Massachusetts
Develop and direct ISO 9001 &14001 management systems; Work with senior leaders to execute improvement projects across organization; integrate Six-Sigma principles with core business processes in the manufacture of medical tubing and custom extrusions; Improve relationships with key customers by improving process capability and reducing variation. One of my key contributions was the introduction of shop-floor Statistical Process Control to 18 extrusion lines. The goal of the project was to drive variability reduction in dimensional tolerances across a multitude of products. I acquired the SPC software, constructed mobile workstations, and provided training to our operators. The program was a success, contributing to a reduction in customer returns, but the best part of the story was the unexpected benefit. In the extrusion business, managing the weight of the finished part is critical in controlling both cost and quality. As you can imagine, inadequate part weight results in nonconformance…a flimsy product with poor application properties. Excess part weight may or may not impact quality, but it certainly drives up cost. When we began using the SPC software to track part weights, we saw an immediate opportunity to reduce variation and produce parts on-target for both weight and dimensional tolerance. As a result, we saw a significant reduction in raw material costs while maintaining the level of quality and application performance that our customers demand.
