James’ internship was designed as an immersive experience where he joined a scrum team working on all aspects of the lifecycle of the software development process. As an individual contributor to the team, James was responsible for building integrations of our e-commerce platform with external systems accountable for handling the interactions between our customers and our support teams. James effectively delivered value from the beginning of his Internship; he demonstrated a deep understanding of Computer Science fundamentals. He was able to leverage concepts like Scalable Distributed Systems, Database Management, Web Application Development. James worked closely with Senior engineers as he would be a seasoned engineer doing this type of work for a while. James did a presentation of software architecture concepts related to Distributed Systems, explicitly speaking about Fault Tolerance. We received excellent feedback from the team about this presentation. During his presentation, James learned how tech companies ensure the integrity and protection of data in the event of failing system components, studied the overall current flow of data from Ecomm to external systems, studied how databases can be made more fault-tolerant, and learned Kubernetes, understanding how Nodes communicate on a cluster, drilling down into pods and containers. James has incredible potential, an engineering mindset focusing on solving problems, a collaborative individual with a very empathetic work style.
