Group Leader and Sir Henry Dale Fellow at the University of Cambridge. I am a cell biologist with a range of research expertise, including fundamental cell biology, membrane trafficking, immunology, virology. My research group use a combination of advanced imaging techniques (including electron microscopy), biochemistry and molecular biology to understand cell biology.

Group LeaderUniversity Of Cambridge Jan 2019 - PresentMy group research fundamental cell biology. We have specific interest in endosome and exosome cell biology, and understanding what role exosomes play in health and disease. -
Postdoctoral ResearcherUniversity Of Cambridge Oct 2012 - Jan 2019- Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the lab of Prof. Scottie Robinson, Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR). - Main project: 'Exosome tethering'. I demonstrated that exosomes could be physically attached to the surface of cells and demonstrated that this process was dependent upon the expression of the antiviral restriction factor, tetherin. Exosomes are a class of extracellular vesicle which are first generated within multivesicular bodies. Our finding that exosomes could be tethered to the cell surface represented a paradigm shift in the field where exosomes were previously considered to be expelled from one cell to act on another. - Additional projects including:(i) Defining lysosomal pathology as a common feature in Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia from patients with mutations in AP-5.(ii) Demonstrating a loss of ER-endosome contacts in various forms of Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia.(iii) Identifying and validating molecular targets for Charcot-Marie Tooth Type 1C therapy. (iv) Transmission Electron Microscopy expertise. -
ConsultantFreelance Jun 2020 - Sep 2022Consultant for cell-based or cell-derived therapies.

Phd StudentUcl Oct 2009 - Oct 2012I undertook a PhD in the lab of Prof Clare Futter where I investigated the role of endosomes in the trafficking and processing of Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP). During this time, we also made fundamental discoveries to define how intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) of multivesicular bodies (MVBs) were generated. In addition to biochemical, molecular and conventional imaging techniques, I became interested in ultrastructural biology and learnt numerous electron microscopy techniques, including conventional EM, cryo immunogold (Tokuyasu) EM, and correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM).
