James “Jim” Evers joined the MBTA in 1999 after getting a bachelor’s degree in engineering. His first job was with the signals engineering. He then went on to be a repairer for the Greenline in 2004. Jim is now President/Business Agent for Local 589 where he represents nearly 7,000 MBTA employees. Jim was elected president in January of 2020. In 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2022 Jim was elected to the ATU International Conventions.In 2012, Jim was elected as Financial Secretary / Treasurer and executive board member. Jim became President/Business Agent in 2020 and successfully re-elected in 2023 and is currently holding this position today. Jim is on the negotiating committee and audit committee for the pension fund. He has completed the ATU’s Financial Secretary/Treasurers training and The Labor Guild’s Financial Leadership program from the Dept. of Labor. Jim also sits on the MBTA Pension Board as the Chairman/trustee and a member of the International Foundation of Employee Benefits. He is certified in public pension plans and multi employer defined contribution plans. He is also a vice president to the MA AFL-CIO, President/Chairman of the New England Council, Executive board member of the Greater Boston Labor Council, Plymouth Bristol Labor Council, North Shore Labor Council and the ATU Can-Am. Jim also co-chairs the coalition of MBTA unions, sits on the Public Transit Public Good coalition(PTPG) and Community Labor United(CLU) among many other community groups, coalitions and grass root organizations. Jim along with his executive board has negotiated multiple working agreements/contracts and one being a historical agreement for Local 589. Jim had also successfully had a pension arbitration award overturned and renegotiated which protected and saved thousands of members and their families from financial disaster. This was a first for the 112 year old Carmen’s union history.
