⭐ Key takeaways from this position: empathy, an ability to read clients and their needs, grammar/proofreading/editing expertise, helping clients fulfill needs in areas that were outside of my own expertise➡️ Being an advisor at a Writing Center is essentially being a conversationalist. I was tasked with providing professional guidance (in-person and online) to hundreds of clients who varied in ability, background, and discipline. To put it into perspective: I was an English major, sometimes advising accounting majors on their white papers or physics majors on their lab reports.➡️ I interviewed, received CRLA Level II certification, and took a semester-long course to work here. ➡️ I studied daily, through reading journal articles, news articles, and/or citation manuals to implement new practices into my advising, for the end-goal of helping writers learn and grow across limited timespans.➡️ ELL writers and beginner writers were especially rewarding to work with because advising them brought me out of my comfort zone and usually entailed long-term work over multiple sessions. I really got to know them and build rapport over regularly scheduled, weekly appointments.➡️ Every situation in the center was context-specific. I balanced using universal advising strategies and professional protocol alongside individualized attention for each client that came into the center. As I got to know them, I sought to understand their assignment, skillset, comfortability, level of rapport, personal wants and needs, and many other things.➡️ When I wasn't advising, I was conducting administrative work such as providing tours to prospective students, filling out and filing session reports, or approving hours as the designated timecard authorizer.

🌟 Key takeaways from this internship: marketing and administrative experience, copywriting, all-hands-on-deck teamwork, writing for the nonprofit/healthcare industry, (extreme!) flexibility➡️ I wrote approximately 3 blog posts per day for the website and interviewed key people in the social work area, as well as clients.➡️ Every day was a case study on problem-solving and collaborating with the other people on the marketing team (videography, social media, graphic design) and other branches to develop advertisements, promotions, video scripts, social media posts, and press releases.➡️ Weekly, our team participated in some form of community outreach to invigorate our work in the office. We volunteered at places such as The Reeb Avenue Center, Franklin Park Conservatory, and the Ronald McDonald House.
