Department Fellow

Current

I am the Department Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London, the co-director of the Membrane Biophysics Group and part of the executive team of fabriCELL. My research focuses on the development of synthetic cells - biomimetic soft materials that aim to mimic the functions and behaviours of biological cells. Building cells from the bottom-up enables a better understanding of cell biology, as well as creating systems that can interface with biological systems. This second property makes synthetic cells a promising technology in applications across biomedicine.Research topics of particular interest include:Development of new signal transduction pathways that cannot be assembled in living systemsEngineering stimuli-responsive synthetic cellsTranslation of synthetic cell technologies for biomedical applicationHigh-throughput production/characterisation of synthetic cells

Oct 2020 - Present

Epsrc Doctoral Prize Fellow

London, United Kingdom

Doctoral Prize Fellowship focusing on development of artificial cell technologies for therapeutic delivery and diagnostics.

Oct 2019 - Oct 2023

Phd Student

London, United Kingdom

My research focuses on the development of lipid-based molecular machines that can respond to specific stimuli. These stimuli could be environmental, for example changes in pH, temperature or enyzme concentration, or external, such as light. Using lipid macromolecule aggregates as chassis for chemical and biological motifs that provide function, I am constructing different systems across multiple length scales to tackle challenges in drug delivery and the developing field of bottom-up synthetic biology.

Oct 2015 - Oct 2019

Co-Founder

Feedbac

London, United Kingdom

I'm a co-founder helping to develop FeedBac, a formulation and diagnostics start-up making the diagnosis of pathogenic bacteria simpler, faster and cheaper.

Apr 2017 - Oct 2023

Summer Research Student

London, United Kingdom

This summer project involved the use of contact angle goniometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the mechanism of an autophobic interaction between aqeuous droplets containing a DLPC:DDAB lipid mixture and mica. It was hypothesised that such interactions are due to electrostatic repulsion between different interfaces in the drop and at the air/water interface. AFM showed deposited DLPC:DDAB bilayers on the mica from where the droplet receded, indicating a repulsion between air-water interface and the water-bilayer interface had occurred. Unfortunately, no in-situ method for observation of this interaction at the nanoscale was available, making further probing difficult within the timeframe of the project.
