Implemented major features of Nest Device Frontend systems to enable new device/application features in preparation for various new product launches. Including Protect, Secure, Doorlock, Cameras, and Thermostats. Includes system design having to balance the needs of power availability on devices, with communications tendencies of clients, and scalability concerns in the backend.Built out multi-region connection management framework to provide operational control of traffic to muliple regions and ensure system reliability.Designed and implemented lightweight datastore using Cassandra for service to reduce usage of MySQL and support high write load in bursty environments. Characteristics include linear scalability and reduced latency variance with respect to load, as well as reduced overall latency at load. Atomicity of updates was preserved in the transition by careful design.Systems that I designed and built of the years support large swaths of production device loads to date and will continue for the forseeable future. At Box I worked on many systems related to backend system scaling. I implemented encryption systems, and lead a team of engineers to help find performance bottlenecks in the system as we scaled various dimensions of the product to meet rapidly expanding demands.I also built several production systems that enabled our operations team to respond more effectively to outages through proactive monitoring, and new application controls. These systems have prevented countless downtime since their deployment in 2011.PHP, Scala, and Python were the languages I used primarily at Box. I dabbled in Go some too, but none of that runs in production.

I worked on two main teams at Google in my time. "Production Systems" and "Maps". The first was an internal tools development group for networking and datacenter management tools. Here for example I helped write, maintain, and deploy a suite of tools to monitor and collect networking usage information (on a *large* production network) and roll it up into useful dashboards for our network operations and site reliability engineer's to use to maintain the site. On the Maps team I was part of a team building features to support direct user editing of places on Google maps. Work for this team spanned the stack from backend system development to frontend javascript feature implementation and testing.

I worked on building reliably fault tolerant systems with pathological failure modes. In particular with respect to security. (not the usual reliability focus) This research was DARPA funded. As such I was part of building demo's to high level DARPA personel of our system software and validating approaches, as well has modeling outcomes in complex systems.
