About James Munro
I was lucky enough to get my start in publishing through the internship program at Writers House, and in May 2013 I began working for the Director of Foreign Rights at WME. There, I developed my understanding of the translation rights sphere – forming solid submission practices, working closely with clients and publishers to coordinate promotional tours, and learning to seamlessly juggle all the moving parts of a rights department within a multi-faceted entertainment agency. I moved to Writers House to become their Subsidiary Rights Associate at the beginning of 2015, quickly becoming an integral part of one of the busiest licensing departments in the world. I was thrilled that this role allowed me to hone my translation rights skills, as I became increasingly involved in the granular details of each deal. I was quickly promoted to Rights Manager in 2017, a new role created to support my increasing responsibility and independent deal making. This time at Writers House widened my purview, pushing me to wear many more hats and move away from foreign-only licensing. I was, for example, immediately expected to take the lead on children’s/YA audio submissions for the whole agency, lending me a fresh look at an exploding format. I also became the point person for educational reprint licensing and helped with various aspects of the dramatic licensing program. My involvement on the theatre side of things gave me a stronger understanding of underlying rights agreements and what it looked like to leverage these adaptations. On the film/TV side, I helped build a database of contacts (with hundreds of producers, studio executives, and co-agents), as well as collate information about our clients’ titles that would build the scaffolding for proactive and meaningful film/TV submissions. I moved from NYC in summer 2018 back to England (my home country) and it was here that I was able to apply my skills as an agent at WME - this time based in the London office.
