About James Shaw

I'm a Project engineer with experience in the oil and gas and malt whisky production sectors. I am currently working as a project engineer on a large scale upper tier COMAH site with multiple malt whisky distilleries where I am given the opportunity to use my engineering, project management and COMAH experience to deliver capital projects. This involves managing multiple projects from concept to handover involving design, budgeting and appointment of main works contractors following capital request. Then managing construction, contracts, programme of works and commissioning of new assets. To date this has involved projects focussing on compliance, innovation, efficiency and expansion of site infrastructure. This involves the application of several different engineering disciplines including mechanical, process, civil, electrical and automation. In the past I worked as a project engineer on gas construction projects on upper tier COMAH gas infrastructure on the client side. On projects involving gas turbine compressors and replacement valves and actuators.Prior to this position I spent 5 years working as a Field Engineer providing drilling and remedial services to the drilling sector of the Oil and Gas Industry. I was a lead Field Engineer in the fishing and remedial department, providing specialist equipment and services such as plug & abandonment, sidetracks and milling and also drilling tools. During this position I worked with many major clients including Shell, Exxon Mobil, Statoil and Maersk. In my previous position I was providing engineering expertise to the operations, sales and maintenance departments for ongoing and upcoming operations in the Norwegian and Danish sectors. Prior to this assignment I had positions based in The UK and The Netherlands.I have been described by my colleagues as responsive and creative with a keen eye for detail.I have a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Robert Gordon University.

Apr 2019 - Present

Project Engineer

St Fergus

on-site project engineer managing several projects primarily aiming to remediate and renew ageing assets on a key COMAH gas terminal. It was responsibility to act as the clients representative to ensure that all of the works are conducted safely, to the approved design and all to the company specification. To do this I must review and convey plans and designs to the site teams then monitor how the works are carried out on site. This involves reviewal of contractor method statement, risk assessments and adherence to these and the permit to work, then assessing works to ensure they have been installed to the required design and standards prior to assets being commissioned. The key challenges I face is working on 40 year old assets on an operational site. This makes it very difficult to manage budgets whilst minimising disruption to operations and ever increasing work scopes. A personal challenge has been understanding several different engineering disciplines including civil and electrical whilst having a core mechanical background.

Jan 2017 - Apr 2019

Field Engineer

Stavanger Area, Norway

I was the lead Field Engineer working in fishing and remedial operations team in Norway, based mainly in the office providing day to day support to the operations team through knowledge sharing, simulations, research and data analysis. I also spent some time offshore when the opportunities arose, adding to my competency portfolio including whipstocks and wellhead recovery operations. The key challenge in the Norwegian sector now is permanent plug and abandonment and reducing the time and cost to abandon a well by using new methods and technologies. Due to the low oil price competition was fierce. My main focus in this position, therefore, was to optimise current technologies, promote new services and progress new products in development.Experiences/Achievements:- Managed several new products in development and field testing in Norway including a new wellhead recovery system, hydraulic jack, multi-cycle pipe cutter and custom ramp whipstock- Successfully led my first project from beginning to end, which included equipment and technical proposal, cost estimation, shipment and returns, cost tracking, operating procedures and performance reviews with the client.- Successfully implemented the frequent use of new documentation processes to the department including MOC's (Management of change), Operations checklists, HARC's (Hazard and Risk Control Analysis) and ECR's (Engineering change requests)- Conducted a comprehensive study of Norway's wellhead recovery operations to streamline cutting operations by optimising BHA configuration and cutting parameters to optimise current technologies

Jun 2015 - Jun 2016

Field Engineer

Aberdeen, United Kingdom

I returned to Aberdeen after my secondment in The Netherlands. During my time in this location I began to lead offshore operations and became involved with the project engineering aspect of the operations.Experiences/Achievements:- Completed the technical training schools attending both the 2nd and final training courses in Houston. I performed well above average, finishing top of class with 90% and 93% average scores respectively.- Lead offshore engineer for operations for certain product lines such as turbodrills, underreamers, section milling, cut & pull.- Managed aspects of drilling and plug and abandonment projects including equipment recommendation, orders and shipment of equipment. I was also responsible for tracking the cost of such projects.- Saved the company 6 to 7 figure sums in NPT and replacements equipment costs as a result of failure and service quality root cause investigations.

Jun 2013 - Jun 2015

Field Engineer

Schoonebeek, Netherlands

During my initial training year, following the first 8 week technical training school, I accepted the opportunity for secondment to the Netherlands. Here I quickly gained valuable hands-on experience in the workshop and at the wellsite.Experiences/Achievements:- Worked with workshop technicians to strip, build, test and inspect all drilling and fishing tools to help understand their components and mechanics. These tools included overshots, spears, jars and pipe cutters.- Learned about rig equipment, safety, operations and tools by travelling to the rig site. The operations observed during these visits included whipstocks, packer milling and cut & pull jobs.- Provided engineering support to the operations team. During this time I developed a system to document and track impact tool usage, stock and requirements. I was also the main point of contact for jar placement simulations and technical queries in the Netherlands.

Jan 2012 - Jun 2013

Intern Operations Engineer

Aberdeen, United Kingdom

Whilst studying engineering I began working for Schlumberger as an intern in the fishing and drilling tool department.- Primarily learning the safe operation of industrial machinery and equipment such as breakout machines, cranes and high pressure test bays. This later included learning the safe usage of hand tools and some NDT inspection techniques. This position introduced me to the oil industry, drilling operations, and the tools used. - During my second placement I was performing and reporting root cause damage/failure investigations of drilling tools and conducting field tests within the operations team. My thesis was also performed during this internship which involved the design of a new drilling tool component. Schlumberger were impressed with my hard work and results I had achieved during the internship and invited me on to the Field Engineer training scheme upon graduation.
