I received my B.Sc. in biological science, specializing in Molecular and Cellular biology (graduating with honors) from the University of Exeter, United Kingdom. During my undergraduate degree, I undertook various research projects and in the summer between my second and third year of my degree, I was offered an internship position at an epigenetic based company in California, Active Motif. I also did a capstone experiment in high school using the CRISPR/Cas system. Since that experiment, I become fascinated by the potential capabilities this system has in treating genetic disorders. In my final year of University, I was given the opportunity to complete a dissertation. For my dissertation, it was focused on using a transient gene expression method called Agroinfiltration to fluorescently tag plant cell’s actin cytoskeleton with GFP to capture actin dynamics along with papillae formations in response to powdery mildew infections. From my research, I created a repeatable protocol for the lab to use to research this dynamic plant response to fungal infections. After completing this research, my dissertation professor offered me an internship to expand my research where I used my designed protocol to tag multiple proteins and observe their dynamics in papillae formations. I was also offered a second internship from a separate lab that was focused on bacteriophage collection and categorization across the UK for phage therapy. During the internship, I designed a phage collection system which is now the design used within the phage collection kits. In high school, I had the opportunity to design an experiment for a capstone to research the capabilities of the CRISPR/Cas system. My experiment consisted of using SureVector, a plasmid assembly technique, to design plasmids containing specific antibiotic resistance genes. Then, using Cas9 RNP, I cut and linearized one of the plasmids containing the kanamycin gene, decreasing transformation efficiency, removing E. coli’s ability to grow on agar containing kanamycin. The summer between my second and third year of University, I was offered the opportunity to work in an epigenetics focused company called Active Motif as an intern. I worked within the services department mainly helping format data, perform qPCR, immunoprecipitation, NGS library prep, Gel electrophoresis, TapeStation, Nanodrop, and sonication of client samples. I will be starting my Ph.D. at the University of Sheffield on the 1st of October, 2024.

InternUniversity Of Exeter Jan 2022 - Jun 2022Exeter, Devon, GbIn my final year at university, I undertook a 7-month dissertation project to investigate the dynamics of plant immune responses to fungal pathogens. The research goal was to optimize the Agrobacterium transient expression system (a method of introducing DNA constructs into plant cells) and generate an effective protocol for the lab to use in multiple research projects. This required tagging of the actin cytoskeleton of Nicotiana benthamiana with GFP, using the Agroinfiltration system, and studying actin cellular response to powdery mildew spores penetrating N. benthamiana cells using fluorescent microscopy. The research aspect of my project concluded in December 2021. However, I was able to continue this research project after completion of my dissertation through an internship. -
InternUniversity Of Exeter Jan 2022 - Jun 2022Exeter, Devon, GbI was offered an additional internship in Dr. Michell’s lab which focused on building a bacteriophage repository library for phages isolated across England. This library, once complete, will be used to expand phage therapy as an alternative to antibiotic treatments due to the steady increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria strains. Currently, samples are collected by civil scientists and shipped to Dr. Michell’s lab where they are processed. Incoming crude samples need to be processed within a certain time frame to minimize any phage loss/degradation. I improved this process by generating a filtration protocol that utilized a plastic syringe/filter system that allowed the samples to be filtered at the collection site. This filtration protocol is now being used within the kits for collecting phages. A significant loss of phage particles is also caused by their “adhesiveness” to the plastic sample vials. My research focused on developing a phage elution method to increase phage recovery from theincoming sample and addition to the library. -
InternActive Motif Jun 2021 - Sep 2021Carlsbad, California, UsI accepted an internship at Active Motif, an epigenetic based company in Carlsbad, California. My internship consisted of assisting multiple different departments (Customer Services, R&D, manufacturing, and Shipping). 80% of my time was spent helping with the Customer Services department, whereI performed immunoprecipitations, qPCRs, NGS library prep, using the Apollo NGS library prep system, gel electrophoresis, TapeStation, Nanodrop and sonication of client samples. I gained valuable knowledge of epigenetic research and how an industry-based lab operates. After my internship ended, I continue working for Active Motif remotely by re-formatting large data sets in silico as well as generating internal PowerPoint slide decks. -
