I have researched and tested high power amplifiers using modern complex modulations for US Airforce installation and assisted in high power rf system design, filtering and switching techniques, and simulcast transmission. I am recently working on cellphone jamming techniques (LTE) and secure military communications over the Internet.

This was an interesting job in that it required that I perform both hardware and firmware work for embedded systems designed to be used as specialized communications equipment for worldwide communications by members of US government organizations. The designs used embedded microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-m3 and -m4, from TI and ST Microelectronics), voice digitizers, modems, TCP/IP communications, encryption, Internet communications, serial communications(I2C, SSI, UART, USART), FPGA algorithm design, programming in C, Verilog, and various assembly languages. All the hardware I designed was sensitive to tampering and could erase its content. I have experience with all the usual lab equipment used for this type of development, including oscilloscopes, JTAG emulator links, IAR Systems Embedded Workbench and Rowley CrossStudio for ARM. I also have quite a bit of experience soldering and removing surface mount components and a few months of experience with removal and mounting ball grid arrays.

Consulting for Naval Research Laboratory and others. I designed a wireless 802.11 spread spectrum radio communication system for the US Marine Corps. It was used to combine (multiplex) and transmit signals representing the movement of a soldier's progress on foot during virtual reality training sessions. I also designed and interfaced the sensing elements to show and record the motion. I translated encryption algorithms from one assembly language to another for use at NSA.

I was responsible for the design and implementation of video processing, A/D conversion, DSP electronics, motor control (stepper motor microstepping and PID controls) , and microcontroller circuitry in digital optical scanner products. I also designed specialized ballast circuitry for very close control of fluorescent lamp brightness used in optical scanners. I also performed EMC engineering to prepare products for market.
