About James Vargas, Gsc, Cd, P. Eng.

Greetings,It is always difficult to put into a few words over thirty -one years of work in the field. I'll attempt to be brief.I first joined the Canadian Military Primary Reserves back in 1992 as a Combat Engineer. During the next 18 years of service, I would learn the trade, apply it in the field and then proceed to teach it to others. In the meantime, I participated to two overseas peace-keeping missions, quickly rose through the ranks, undergoing trade and leadership training reaching the rank of Warrant Officer, and managed to complete my undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering. It is during my time as a Combat Engineer that allowed me to practice and understand manual labor, infrastructure and road work, and then plan accordingly. It only seemed natural to move onto construction. After a brief stint as Field Engineer and work in an engineering structural design firm, I found a mentor willing to teach me the rudimentals of buildings construction in 2002 and I am lucky to have worked on many different projects of increasing size and taken on a increasing level of responsibility.I would say that "mission" and "passion" are words that summarize my personality and work.I look forward to the challenges presented by my current project, and also look to the future.

  • Canadian Armed Forces | Forces Armées Canadiennes Primary Reserves
    Combat Engineer Squadron Sergeant Major
Canadian Armed Forces | Forces Armées Canadiennes Primary Reserves Jan 1992 - Jan 2010
    Montreal, Canada Area
Canadian Forces Primary Reserves Field EngineeringProject type: Civil constructionProject value: 50 000 $CAN to 1.3 million $CANSupervised Budget: 1 million $CANCombat Engineering is the equivalent of civil construction, but within the operations of the military. Aside from direct combat operations, roads, bridges, culverts, explosive and structures are within the capabilities of the Combat Engineer.I joined Montreal's Primary Reserves Combat Engineer Regiment of the Canadian Forces in 1992. After completing trade and leadership qualifications, 2 overseas peace-keeping missions, spending the summers as an intructor, I reached the rank of Warrant Officer and occupied the position of Sergeant Major (the equivalent of a Construction Superintendent). The number of bridges, roads, culverts, demolition tasks and field operations during this time are countless. As a Sergeant Major, I planned, staffed, equipped and executed these projects faultlessly, culminating in the construction of 2 training camps, simulating overseas field conditions for recruits in Canadian Forces Base Farnham. It is during this time that I also completed my undergraduate Civil Engineering studies. I wouldn't be who I am today without my time in the Forces.

This was the platform from which I flew.
