Singlehandedly took over extensive but unreliable VMware ESX/EMC SAN hosting system from Dutch outsourcing company, looking after 150 virtual machines and 20 legacy servers, mostly running Windows 2003. Stabilised system and gradually made system manageable, implementing Active Directory, WSUS, monitoring and managed software deployment. Reworked networking and firewalling, implementing a proper DMZ and allowing the system to pass external penetration testing. Implemented company's first successful helpdesk system and managed the helpdesk for the first 6 months, afterwards becoming 2nd and 3rd-line support for the helpdesk. Debugged and fixed a number of bugs in the company's Delphi-based applications, also working with and supporting the internal development team. Investigated and fixed numerous performance issues with Windows, SQL Server, VMware, SAN storage and the company's applications.

Network Engineer for 500-user, multi-site corporate network. Initially hired as Desktop/System Support Engineer. Shortly afterwards, became half of two-man team on emergency project to take back in-house previously outsourced IT infrastructure functions. Over 5 month period, personally implemented 500-user, 25-server Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 farm, new Windows 2003 Active Directory and Exchange 2003 environments, AD-integrated high-availability clustered Samba/CUPS file and print services, OpenVPN SSL VPN services, high-availability Linux-based routing and firewalling, became Progress DBA for UK's largest single Visualfiles installation, and developed customized Linux distribution to network boot legacy PCs into Citrix desktop. Project was on-time and under-budget. Promoted to senior position as Network Engineer 9 months after starting. Later involved as in-house technical lead on MPLS WAN upgrade, high-availability internet connectivity, office relocation project, back-office offshoring project and implementation of VoIP. Investigated and debugged numerous performance problems of Progress-backed Visualfiles application. Heavily involved in artificial load-testing of Visualfiles app using Mercury LoadRunner. Implemented Citrix Secure Gateway for offshoring and homeworking projects. Implemented comprehensive traffic shaping on WAN to maximize investment. Planned and implemented decommissioning of previous legacy systems, shutdown of sister company's IT infrastructure and re-integration of those systems. Implemented security audit and devised company's security, antivirus and patching strategies. Implemented comprehensive systems and network availability, performance and environmental monitoring.
