Smart Insurance, or SmartD Rx as our Medicare Part D plan, was a bold new effort to offer to Medicare beneficiaries access to our plan with a broad network of pharmacy providers including Walgreens and tens of thousands of independent and small chain pharmacies that serve the senior population in small town America and urban settings.SmartD was sold to another Medicare Part D sponsor, ESI in late 2013. I continue to believe that Part D succeeds due to the efforts of pharmacy providers and their extraordinary relationship with their patients.

Inc #1, Memberhealth was one of the national players administering the CMS Medicare Part D program. And was the INC #9 in 2006 and INC#1 in 2007My organization was responsible for individual sales. With the assistance of many players both in and outside the company we enrolled over 1.3 million Medicare beneficiaries in a highly competitive and compliant-focused sales environment.In 2008 when Memberhealth was awarded the #1 on the Inc 500 list of fastest growing privately-held companies revenues had grown to 1.4b from less than 50 million in three years. There have only been 5 companies in the history of the award that were our size or larger.The company merged with Universal American, one of the largest senior insurance product carriers in the country. Memberhealth then began administering the drug benefits for Medicare Advantage products. I left the company a year after the acquisition.Memberhealth was sold to CVS Caremark for about 1.3b. The Part D and MA programs spawned by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 were the most successful change in the healthcare system in the past 40 years. Unfortunately the spirit of innovation, entrepreneurial initiatives, and patient relationships are challenged by the realities of accelerating costs and other pervasive market dynamics.
