I decided when I was 16 years old that I would dedicate my life to education and helping others. I was part of an experimental class called Activity-Oriented Program in high school that combined two teachers and their students. The subject was civics. Instead of working our way through a textbook, we actually created our own government: formed a congress, debated bills, voted, etc. I saw failing students begin to receive C’s and C-students receive A’s. More important, these kids were excited to come to class and learn. It opened my eyes to the potential in every child, if given the right environment.Since that time I have organized and written more than $100,000,000 in grants, obtained numerous corporate contributions, started many new programs, supervised 100s of professional staff, purchased and renovated property for community use, led five accreditation applications, became a facilitator of the Pacific Institute’s Investment in Excellence program, obtained teaching certificates in Michigan and Washington, taught at Madonna University and the University of Michigan, taught myself Spanish, and traveled throughout Spain, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. I have been busy!I once was asked what keeps me going. The answer was easy: if you are mission driven, you cannot be stopped!
