My initial role was with the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) team a month after launch, raising awareness of EUSS for EU citizens to remain legally in the UK following Brexit and encouraging applications. My primary focus was with local authorities and other key government departments such as the Dept Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, as well as the Scottish, Welsh & Northern Irish governments, to help plan and co-ordinate communications activity to reach EU citizens and encourage them to apply to the EUSS. At the conclusion of the initial deadline in June 2021, over 6 million EU citizens had made an EUSS application.I then moved to the Illegal Migration team, initially working with the Nationality and Borders Bill team, planning strat comms activity around the passage of the Bill through Parliament and supporting activity for the bill's implementation stages once it became law. With an increasing focus in the team on illegal migration via small boats, my strat comms experience was crucial for my move to the upstream and international team. I led on upstream migrant deterrent comms campaigns, identifying key countries with which we could work with on deterring prospective illegal migration, linked to common nationalities arriving in small boats. I worked closely with the Foreign Office and governments/stakeholders in these priority countries, including Albania where I ran a short social media campaign via the British Embassy's Facebook page to raise awareness of the dangers of channel crossings or increased prison sentences for migrants in-country, in an effort to deter prospective migrants planning such journeys.
