About James Cheatley

I am based in Singapore working for the Motion Picture Association. I began here as their Regional Director of Operations, South East Asia and now I hold the position of Senior Regional Director, VOD, Digital Affairs & Intellectual Property. My current responsibilities including overseeing MPA's advocacy on VOD and digital economy issues and artificial intelligence as well as copyright matters across the APAC region. In late 2016 I took a role at Screen Producers Australia as Director, Policy and Government Relations. Previously, I was a Senior Legal Officer at the Australian Copyright Council. Before that, I was a Senior Legal Officer in the Copyright Law Section of the Australian Government Attorney-General's Department. I started with the Attorney-General's Department in 2008.I studied Law and Art History (started a PhD,currently suspended). I have a keen interest in the nexus between art and the law, particularly the role copyright plays in providing incentives for the production, distribution and consumption of culture. I am a passionate advocate for creator's rights and the role of copyright in allowing creators to derive income from their creative work.
