Assistant Editor, Canadian Pharmacy Technicians' Letter
Originally, I started on the publication's Editorial Advisory Board, which subsequently transformed into an Assistant Editor role for the Canadian Pharmacy Technician’s Letter upon its launch. In this role I work with a team to create 1 letter to be published per month. The Canadian Pharmacy Technician’s Letter is a monthly, subscription-based publication providing reliable recommendations and practical advice for pharmacy technicians. It is one of a collection of publications published by Therapeutic Research Center since 1985 which currently serves countless pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and prescribers in the United States and Canada. The Canadian Pharmacy Technician's Letter gives pharmacy technicians a succinct analysis of relevant topics and focuses on providing actionable recommendations. Pharmacy technicians rely on the concise articles for recommendations to help their practice. The Canadian Pharmacy Technician's Letter is completely independent and has no connection with any pharmaceutical company or sponsors, aiming to provide objective and unbiased recommendations to assist pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, and prescribers. My responsibilities here include: • Identifying topics for writers and editing the produced draft to specific publication standards as determined by the team. • Ensuring content accuracy, appropriateness, and final approval for monthly subscription-based publications. • Collaborating with Therapeutic Research Center team to revise and develop other associated TRC publications (Pharmacist’s Letter, Canadian Pharmacist’s Letter, Prescriber’s Letter, Pharmacy Technician’s Letter, etc). • Part of original development team tasked to create this publication and integrate it into existing monthly publication cycle.
Pharmacist Immunization Trainer
2010 was an exciting year for pharmacists, as immunization authority was approved, which meant flu shots and basic immunizations could be delivered by pharmacists. Although most companies received training from the BCPHA program, Safeway’s competitive advantage was to deliver all training in-house. I became 1 of 3 immunization trainers in the Lower Mainland, and to date have helped train over 200 pharmacists to deliver immunizations, after obtaining Pharmacist Immunization Certification from the BC Pharmacy Association and Pharmacy Based Immunization Delivery Certification from the American Pharmacists Association. I delivered pharmacy based immunization training programs for all pharmacists company wide and evaluated pharmacist performance individually to certify them to deliver immunizations. Safeway currently is an immunization leader in Canada, and I am excited to be an ongoing resource for pharmacists with questions about immunizations in practice. In this capacity I reported to the Regional Pharmacy Manager and the Director of Pharmacy Professional Services.
Assistant Pharmacy Manager
I began working at Safeway as a student intern during my undergraduate degree. After graduation, I continued full-time as a “floater” pharmacist in and out of Vancouver, relocating to places such as Nelson, Powell River, and more for 6 months. Currently, I am the Assistant Pharmacy Manager at the Point Grey location. In the first year of my time at Safeway I was humbled to be a key presenter and off-site speaker on behalf of the company for community based health awareness workshops. Key accomplishments in this role are: • Keynote speaking and presenter for Merck Canada, covering topics including: new vaccine launches, injection technique and more to groups ranging from 10-40 attendees. • Public outreach talks for PWC, HealthWeek, BC Hydro, seniors groups, and more!• Developed the immunization service workflow model in-store, which has seen continued growth year over year. • Expert reviewer for various immunization training programs. My day-to-day tasks and responsibilities include: • Ensuring the safe and effective use and supply of medication to patients, which includes overseeing and delegating functions to support staff, technicians, and assistants. • Provide pharmaceutical care and consultation to patients and identifying and resolving drug-related problems. • Developing relationships with patients, check for drug interactions and therapeutic appropriateness of treatments, make recommendations for minor ailments through making clinical decisions, administering immunizations, and conducting medication reviews. • Manage day-to-day pharmacy workflow, issues and support staff to ensure maximal safety and efficiency.
Pharmacy Technician Bridging Program Instructor
One of my most enjoyable teaching experiences included preparing more than 500 pharmacy technician students over the last 4 years in preparation for their licensing and jurisprudence exams. I teach in an interactive and engaging way, using my own innovative learning tools (eg. Youtube video updates, online webinars) beyond what was provided to help teach crucial concepts to students, in-person and online. Highlights of interest in this role included: • Taught the ethics and legislation portion of the bridging program. (4 years, 12 cohorts) • In-class instruction (2 years, 3 terms each, 25 students per cohort) • Online instruction for students in the Lower Mainland (50-100 students per cohort) • Co-developer and presenter for College of Pharmacists of BC approved Jurisprudence Exam Workshop (8 hour workshop - 100 students) The program ended at the 5 year mark, when bridging of pharmacy technician licensure by the province of BC ended. However, I still play an advisory role in pharmacy technician education programs.
Clinical Lab Instructor
I provided clinical teaching and training to classes of ~30 UBC Pharmacy students for 2 terms. This role reported to the Pharmacy Lab Coordinator. I greatly enjoyed leading small group discussions on specific clinical issues and overseeing mock patient practice cases. Some topics of interest included: • Compounding techniques • Patient interviewing skills • Patient counselling skills • Best practices
Pharmacy Intern
Here, I prepared prescriptions for checking by the pharmacist. Typically interns act in an assistant role, responsible for compounding and inventory management, however, by pharmacist recommendation, I also counselled patients and answered patient questions. After graduation, I returned to Safeway as a full-time Pharmacist, where I became the Assistant Manager of the Pharmacy department at my store.
