A senior technical leader with a passion for sustainable products, teams, and services.I've worked with everything from cloud data hosting at scale to digital manufacturing to aircraft control software, and experimented with game development and systems programming on the side. I have a keen interest in exploring new technologies and developing new skills, and combining them with past experience to jump into anything and everything.I've most recently been working with kubernetes, python, ruby/rails, various commercial and open-source database technologies, security and compliance management, and building and operating cloud services at scale at IBM. In past lives I've worked with web technologies like WebGL and websockets; Mac and iOS development using Objective-C, Cocoa Touch, cocos2d, and Swift; linux software development using C/C++, Qt, and Xlib; and a bit of higher-level embedded work including a Raspberry Pi+Cloud-based 3D printer control system and an autonomous ultrasonic collision avoidance system for small commercial drones. I also have a passing familiarity with creative tools including Blender, Final Cut Pro and Motion, and Adobe Illustrator. But the best part of tech is using it to do something meaningful, and that means understanding the product and business as well. As a founder, cloud service architect, and consultant at various points in my career I've balanced what's possible with what's useful and what's needed, understanding the broader problem space to find product/market fit and then sustainably growing into it.I'm in Halifax, Canada, and have been 100% remote since 2016. In my spare time I volunteer with Eastern Shore Ground Search & Rescue and am building a truck camper out of t-slot aluminum extrusion, which is basically industrial lego and a blast to work with.If you're looking for more information about me or anything I've worked on, or just want to grab a coffee sometime, let's get in touch. Shoot me a message here on Linkedin or directly at james@jamesthorne.ca.
