I started my career as a beat reporter and transitioned into computer-assisted reporting in the late 1990s. It seemed natural to find better ways to present data from my stories online, so I learned html, asp and sql server and started building data-driven web pages.I kept building my programming skills, which led to jobs where development was my primary responsibility. Along the way I picked up skills in a variety of database platforms and programming languages.At The Des Moines Register, I led a group dedicated to building news applications from the ground up. At The Washington Post, I was part of a team dedicated to collecting, organizing and disseminating data products throughout the organization.After a few years out of newsrooms, I am thrilled to return to my roots as a computational journalist for The Dallas Morning News.I should also mention that I've taught quite a bit, though not in recent years. I spent a lot of time teaching classes and doing presentations and panels for The National Institute of Computer-Assisted Reporting.
