I am responsible for finance, accounting, human resources, contracts, and related business activities. I implemented a new set of employee benefits (health, dental, life, and disability insurance, and Section 125 flexible spending plans), including HSA options. My goal is to give the employees the best possible experience (including expense reports!) since I'm an engineer as well. I want them to focus on being productive, not filling out paperwork.I work with customers (including JP Morgan Chase), to negotiate contracts for licenses, maintenance, and VAR activities. Many of our customers (including Siemens) are overseas (Europe, South America, and Asia), and this adds to the contracting and finance complexity. I work with vendors to get the best services and keep our staff productive.I continue to be involved in technical areas, including software engineering and professional services. I built our bug tracking system, integrated it with our code repository, and continue to improve it to keep our engineers working at maximum efficiency. I contribute to enhancements and bug fixes in the core database product. I consult with customers (and potential customers) to help them understand how our technology can be of help to them. I also work with customers to identify and build enhancements that improve their applications. I enjoy traveling to see customers and present at conferences in North America, Europe, South America, and Asia.

VMware purchased the product and team from GemStone Systems. During the time with VMware I continued the activities from GemStone (below) and GemTalk (above). I worked with our product to fit into a cloud strategy and became an expert in Cloud Foundry.

I started with GemStone in QA where I led the modernization of the automated testing and provided technical leadership for three other people on the QA team. After the QA process stabilized, my focus shifted to professional services where I consult on a variety of customer applications, give architectural guidance, and assist in troubleshooting problems. I teach technical classes on application architecture and design of complex database systems. I present regularly at technical conferences on web applications and multi-tiered database topics. This work involves domestic and international travel, and includes industries ranging from financial services to security/intelligence to manufacturing. I lead the software development team (about six people) for Business1, a healthcare enterprise billing system using object technology (Smalltalk) and a SQL database. I helped go from a couple builds per month to daily builds and consolidated the number of supported versions from six to one by improving the release process. I introduced automated unit testing which significantly improved quality. I worked with customers and outside vendors on foreign system interfaces.BulldogIT purchased the Business1 product and team from Per-Se Technologies (see below). The company closed soon after I left.

Per-Se Technologies (now part of McKesson) hired my team in Fargo to introduce agile development practices and assist in stabilizing Business1, a healthcare enterprise billing system. The product and team was eventually sold to BulldogIT (above).

James came in the door, hit the floor running, and quickly got the project on a successful track. The outcome of James’ efforts is a completed, highly sophisticated electronic medical record that has been objectively rated by Superior Consulting, via an external audit, to be equivalent in functionality and overall quality to similar software packages developed by the industry giants. I truly believe that our outcome would have been not near as good, if not bleak, if we had not had the good fortune to have James on board our team.”This project had two owners and the second owner terminated the project and closed our office.

As a supervisor in the Tools and Technologies Group, I managed three developers and was responsible for the report writer, inter-application communications, and distributed processing. I introduced a new way to test printer drivers, vastly simplifying the application QA process.Great Plains was purchased by Microsoft in 1996.

I started as an Application Developer, after a couple promotions over three years was made manager. One of my teams provided the software running on several thousand terminals connected to our healthcare information system. I redesigned the terminal emulator in portable ‘C’ to run on Macintosh, X Window System, and Microsoft Window. Another of my teams provided report writer tools, user interface utilities, foreign translation utilities, and interfaces to other computer systems. This involved significant customer and vendor interaction. In this position I managed six developers.
