As the co-founder, first CEO, and now CTO of D5AI, a creative startup company doing research and development in artificial intelligence, I am passionate about solving the great unsolved challenges of AI based on deep learning. With over 20 years of experience in AI, machine learning, and programming, I have developed novel architectures and training methods that improve performance, security, and safety, while also making very large networks easier to understand and control. These methods also enable training networks with a trillion or more parameters at a small fraction of the computational cost of standard methods. Most importantly, these networks can be trained such that the activity of individual inner nodes can be explained in normal language. This is an important contribution to making AI safe.Prior to D5AI, I was the founder, chairman, and CEO of Dragon Systems, a pioneer in speech recognition technology. I grew Dragon from a start-up to a $70 million annual revenue company, and developed key concepts that became the standard for high performance speech recognition. I am also a distinguished scholar and entrepreneur in residence at the University of Central Florida, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a distinguished career professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
