As long as I can remember, my family has been in the automotive business. We’ve owned gas stations, done automotive repair, and even sold new cars. I’ve got a lot of great memories from that time, but there’s one in particular that really shaped the direction of my life. Back in 1979, my grandfather bought a new car dealership, and unfortunately, it failed. It was tough on him, and honestly, he was never quite the same after that. Watching him go through that experience left a mark on me, and it’s why I’m so passionate about helping other families avoid that same pain.After my time in the Navy, I got into retail and worked my way up pretty quickly. Then, in 2002, I joined a group of companies in Birmingham, Alabama. Over the next fifteen years, I moved up to president and COO of the holding company. We had six different operating companies, and I was CEO for several of them. One of those companies was an insurance third-party administrator, and at some point, I just felt stuck. Nothing I tried seemed to work, and it was frustrating. I remember talking to my wife about it, and she mentioned a CPA she had worked with named Ken, who was helping another business deal with some similar issues.I was stubborn at first, but after another month of frustration, I decided to swallow my pride and call Ken. We brought him in to help implement EOS—the Entrepreneurial Operating System—in the business. I saw immediate results. It worked so well that I rolled it out across all the companies I was responsible for. Fast-forward to today and I’ve personally implemented EOS in eight businesses that I’ve started or run, and now I help other entrepreneurs do the same.After 32 years of leadership, 16 as CEO, and starting multiple businesses, some successful and some not, I’m committed full-time to helping entrepreneurs get what they want from their businesses. More than anything, I work hard to make sure others don’t experience the same kind of failure my grandfather went through.
