I fell in love with aviation at the ripe old age of 4, learning at that early age a mile of road can take you a mile, but a mile of runway can take you anywhere. And it has. After taking advantage of early retirement from a career in air traffic control, I embarked on the equivalent of a professional sequel. Like any good book, that sequel has had several chapters: executive at regional and national companies; strategic advisor to corporate leaders; operational excellence consultant; speaker; panelist; and all-around leadership development guru. Through it all, I have never stopped learning, exploring, and pursuing the best life for myself and those I love and work alongside. Leveraging a curiosity of how people and things work, I haves been on a continual path of discovery about myself and the world around me. A path illuminated with the recognition of how the forces that apply in the world of flight also apply to our personal human condition. The resulting keynote and associated workshops have been described as “storytelling at its finest” and “the most effective four hours of my life.” Learning to Fly: Living Ahead of Your Power Curve© is the product of a lifetime of passion, curiosity, and purpose. I challenge audience members and workshop participants to embark on a journey only a mile of runway can enable. Through the combination of storytelling, the simplest introduction to the physics of flight, and a challenge to live in the double-positive, those who share time with me are left with the tools to lead a life of intentionality, joy, and self-awareness.A life ahead of the power curve. At the now truly ripe old age of 57, I live in Collierville, Tennessee with my wife of 36 years, Kelly. We are so very grateful to call our adult children, Abigail, Amelia, and Joe, our dearest friends. We love British television, pinot noir, travel, and cooking or finding our next great meal. An avid supporter of the National Championship Air Races among other aviation events, I maintain my lifelong love of flight and still look skyward at the sound of every plane.

Metro AreaServed as a change agent / Program Manager in the Organizational Effectiveness office. Leveraged operational expertise and creative vision to birth two change management initiatives, the Leading Edge Forum and the Spirit of Performance video series. Oversaw the full creation, planning, and execution of both products. Responsible for budget ($2M+), contract oversight, 20+ person team, metrics, and validation.Leading Edge Forum I (2008) was an atypical, innovative leadership development opportunity for operational managers at the FAA. Used private industry best practices to deliver previously unseen, highly effective communication and leadership skills to identified management change agents throughout the FAA. Attendees were then charged with a “pay it forward” responsibility to become leaders within leaders which created a secondary wave of change.Spirit of Performance (2008) video set was an award-winning strategic communications effort to restore pride in the name of public service and to serve as a catalyst for employee engagement and dialog. The series demonstrated exceptionally high production value and delivered powerful messaging with open endings to prompt discussion and feedback. Series was one of the first major efforts to address poor employee viewpoint numbers for the FAA. Leading Edge Forum II (2009) built upon the success of the first year to reach even more of the managerial workforce. Established goals of having the Director of Operations in face to face discussions with the entire operational workforce and for leveraging social media which, as of that time, was an untapped resource. Accomplished both objectives furthering the efforts to rebuild existing relationships while creating new pathways for leadership and innovation.Combined, these three initiatives played critical roles in arresting the free-fall employee engagement survey results and placed the FAA on the current steady improvement it has demonstrated over the last five years. -
