Greater Seattle Area

For the past several years, I have served as a Patent Attorney and Professionally Licensed Engineer (in Mechanical, Chemical, and Metallurgical Engineering) at Lund Patent Law. In my tenure there, I led a wide range of client projects to improve their legal posture and business operations, including the turnaround of the Brita product line at Clorox. I also utilize my deep knowledge of intellectual property and contract law to draft and prosecute patents, trademarks, and negotiate and draft license agreements on behalf of clients. I also provide litigation support, claim charting, and freedom to operate analysis for clients. My long career as an engineer allows me to cultivate strong interpersonal relationships with key stake holders, as well as establish credibility and rapport, to secure long term business. In addition, I consult with clients requiring a wide range of engineering expertise including product design and launch, material specification, failure analysis, and 3D CAD. I also occasionally serve as an expert witness in litigation cases.

Portland, Oregon Area

As the Patent and Trademark Attorney for Stolowitz, Ford, and Cowger, I utilized my knowledge of law and engineering to counsel clients regarding their legal rights and obligations on a wide range of legal cases. In particular, I obtained strong patent portfolios for clients. I also helped smaller clients flesh out series of product lines supported by their intellectual property as well as other strategies for achieving a successful business that leverages their intellectual property. More specifically, I worked on domestic, international, PCT applications and prosecution; patent novelty, infringement and validity opinions, reissues, and client counseling. Technology practice areas included both hardware and software (routers, internet TVs, network devices, semiconductor packaging, LEDs, antennas, wireless devices, network communication protocols, QOS, cell phones, microphones, printers, scanners, social media) and business methods, in addition to medical devices, and various processes/devices in the broad mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, materials, and electromechanical fields. I left Stofoco to better serve the interests of my clients. I obtained 29 allowances of 96 active cases during my tenure there.

Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

At Hamre, Schumann, Muller, and Larson, I served as a Patent Agent/IP Attorney that collaborated with clients to draft necessary legal documents for patent applications, and prosecuted patent applications before the USPTO to obtain broad, strong patents for clients. I primarily worked in the mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, materials science, and electro-mechanical art areas. Curt Hamre was my main patent contact at Merchant & Gould while I worked at the startup PUR. It was a pleasure to work for his fine group in Minneapolis.

At Lund Engineering, I served as the president of a product development consulting firm, where I developed and assisted in the launch of proprietary products for client companies. I provided services according to client needs in concept development, prototyping, design, specification, vendor qualification, manufacturing troubleshooting, and automated assembly. Duties also typically included systems development (PDP, EDC, QC protocol) and implementation, and department setup/reorganization to ensure profitability. I also occasionally served as an expert witness in patent infringement cases. Led the turnaround of the Brita division of Clorox.

Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area, North Carolina

At Teltech, I developed a 40k document fully hyperlinked proprietary intranet for Alcatel along with partners Denise DeSota and Dave Magnani, current CEO of Teltech. The subject matter of the intranet included patents & business competitive intelligence in the optical fiber and fiber optic cable areas, and included the automated use of 30 or so proprietary boolean-based algorythms that we developed for Alcatel, each comprising hundreds of line of code. After a copyright agreement was reached with content providers, the intranet was hosted on our web server, and fully hyperlinked, using an extensive vocabulary particular to those industries, to help Alcatel maintain its competitive edge in a highly competitive industry.

During my tenure at Recovery Engineering, also know as PUR, I held several positions including Head of Research & Development, Senior Project Engineer, and Engineer in Charge of Current Products. One of my leading accomplishments was coordinating R&D, product development, and project management for Pūr, facilitating company growth from a 6 employee startup to a 280 person corporation, and leading to the acquisition of the company by Proctor & Gamble.At PUR, I utilized my engineering skills to develop six technologies that were later patented and utilized by the company to develop new water purification products that generated over $250 million in sales. In achieving these goals, I led multi-functional teams that conducted market & competitor research, technology development & acquisition, and the integration of this technology into robust, reliable consumer products.

St. Paul, Mn

Developed proprietary materials processing techniques involving lasers and various thin film deposition techniques (CVD, PVD, PECVD) to produce unique composite materials. Also worked on carbon fiber prepreg process development. Awarded $50,000 "Genesis Grant" which ultimately lead to two patents for 3M.

Transferred From Uc Berkeley With Advisor Tony Evans

While at Berkeley and Santa Barbara, I completed leading edge composites research with adviser Tony Evans. I also helped set up the Materials Program at UC Santa Barbara, of which Dr. Evans was the chair. I was coauthor on published papers that have been cited by over 10,000 subsequent peer reviewed papers in the area concerning the fracture mechanics of composite materials.

Photolithography development/characterization, 2nd level packaging process development using vapor phase soldering processes and thermal modeling techniques to characterize the contribution of the enthalpy of condensation on the uniformity of solder preform eutectic flow. Three IBM job offers were given to me at the end of the summer, but I chose graduate school from open offers at MIT, Stanford, and Berkeley.

Indianapolis, Indiana Area

Worked under the guidance of Dr. Robert Tucker on Amorphous Coatings Development. Created corrosion database for various plasma and detonation gun deposited wear and corrosion resistant materials used, for example, on turbine engine blades and cutting tools. Evaluated failure mechanisms using SEM with EDX to characterize coating microstructure, impurities, and failure surface topography to further refine coating production processing windows.
