About James Baxter
I'm interested in making autonomous systems move. The robotic systems that excite me are those that make original decisions, explore previously unknown and uncertain environments, and locomote themselves in interesting ways.I've worked in industry for several years, developing a mix of hardware and software skills that allow me to rapidly prototype new ideas. My primary focus within robotics is motion planning and control, but I also enjoy challenges in machine learning and mechanical / electrical design.I'm currently a Ph.D. candidate in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, where I perform research that improves the mobility of autonomous vehicles operating in challenging off-road conditions. Prior to that, I studied at Purdue University, where I majored in Mechanical Engineering and minored in Computer Science.

Research And Advanced Engineering Intern
Performed ADAS research & development. Independently created metrics suite to objectively score radar gridmapping algorithm on correctness compared to LIDAR ground truth. Demonstrated validity and usefulness through case study comparing effects of algorithm changes on performance. Also worked in a small group to redesign software framework for research.
Project Manager
Led a group of students to recreate the video game "Rocket League" in real life with a human controlled RC car competing against an autonomous one
President
Oversaw a group of project managers that each led small group projects focused on developing members' skills and abilities in the autonomous systems space.Responsibilities included:- Creating a cohesive tutorial series to teach incoming members Ubuntu, Docker, ROS, and Python- Assisting project managers in funding projects- Restructuring club leadership as.
Undergraduate Researcher
Assisted in research goals of producing a small autonomous vehicle that uses 3D perception sensors to augment imprecise operator control. Developed web interface to view sensors, waypoint following behavior, and collaborated on sound localization system.
Autonomous Systems Intern
Developed a drive by wire system for an electric UTV. The system enables an off-the-shelf platform to receive motion commands from high level autonomy software and execute them safely and reliably. This is used for internal testing and demonstrations of autonomy capabilities.
Undergraduate Researcher
Performed research for credit under Professor Mou.Designed and prototyped a two-way interface between a computer and small FPV RC car, then made improvements to monocular SLAM algorithm via novel image pre-processing and noise rejection techniques. This is a component building towards the car independently exploring and mapping an unknown environment.
